LAMP-BRACKETS FOR SEWING-MACHINE TABLES. No. 185,878. Patented Jan.2-, 1877.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM VASSIE, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BRACKETS FOR SEWING-MACHINE TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 185,878, dated January 2, 1877; application filed February 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM VASSIE, of the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented an Improvement in a Lamp-Holding Attachment for Sewing-Machines, for which Letters Patent were jointly issued to F. W. Wilson and myself the 21st day of September, A D. 1875, and No. 167,864, of which the following is a specification:
The object of the invention is to afford a convenient movable device attached to sewing-machines for holding a lamp, so as to furnish a convenient light to the operator while Working a sewing-machine at night.
The device patented consists in a hollow socket passing through a sewing-machine table, and provided with a rim, through which two screws pass to fasten the socket to the table. A hollow pillar was made to slide through the said hollow socket, and was held in its place by a set-screw, the object being to afl'ord a means to elevate or lower the lamp to any required height, the bracket being so arranged that the operator could move the lamp horizontally to any position required. A reflector was also arranged and attached to the bracket, so that the operator could place it at any required angle to throw the light directly upon the work.
My present improvement relates to a more convenient device for attaching the said bracket-holder to the table, and for adjusting the hollow pillar to regulate the height of the lamp; and it consists in the employment of a hollow clamp attached to the side of a sewingmachine table, as shown, by means of a clamp thumb-screw.
By reference to the drawing, it will be seen that Figure 1 represents a full view of the lamp-holding attachment and lamp, and the position of the clamp on the sewing-machine table. Fig. 2 shows a side View of the clamp b detached, with the hollow pillar a passed through it, and which is held in any position in the said clamp by means of the small setscrew e.
The bracket is held in its place by the lefthand pin f of the same, passed into the top of the hollow pillar a, where it swings as from a pivot in any direction.
The clamp is affixed to the sewing-machine table by means of the screw d tightened on the under side of the table.
The whole device, when not needed, can instantly be taken oh, and, when needed, adjusted in a moment.
I am aware that lamp-brackets for sewingmachines have been constructed so as to be detachable and capable of being adjusted to any desired elevation by means of aclamping device having a solid post arranged adjustably thereon; but such I do not claim.
What I claim as my invention is- A hollow pillar, or, provided with the setscrew 0, for holding and adjusting the pinfof the lamp-bracket, in combination with clamps I), provided with the adjusting-screw c and clamping-screw d, substantially as described. Dated at Hamilton, Canada, this 22d day of November, 1875.
WILLIAM VASSIE.
Signed in the presence of WM. BRUCE, WM. B. BRUCE.
