The object of this invention is to provide an improvement in `the type o ackage shown therein and to produce a pac age in which the possibility of the matches contained therein bein accidentally ignited is entirel avoided. y invention relates particular to a means 'for covering vand consequent yprotectin the heads of the matches in the package so t at it is not possible forthe same to be brought in frictional contact with some object or objects that ight be contained in the users pocket, wher-eg the matches would be accidentally ignited.

The primary object of my invention'therefore, is to provide a package in which the features of safety are greatly stressed to such an extent that it practically impossible for accidents to be caused through the use ings, similar reference of a match package suchIn as is made in accordance with this invention. y With these objects and such other objects as may hereinafter'appear, in view, Ihave devised the particular arrangement of parts set forth below and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto. t

.At 5 is shown a fastening staple which extends through the iap 2, through the wing 4 on the match stripl 3 and through the body portion 1 of the paper 1' cover strip, thus securely holding the match strip 3 in position.

It will be seen that the match strip 3, in the construction provid ed, Yextends transversely of the entlre paper covering strip 1 and the match strip 3 is further secured tothe paper cover strip l by means of another staple 6 which extends through the match strip and l 'K0 through the cover-1.

The staple 6 is located at rightangles to the staple- 5 and it passes throu h the narrow marginal portion V7 located a ongl the bases of the matches' in the strip 3. The cover flap 9 is provided with an abra- A .sive strip 10 which is 4preferably located `along one ofits side edges, lsuch edge being that which is remote from the match heads inthe strip.

In the-type of package forming the subject of my invention, it willbe seen that the' match heads are located toward what would be an open side of the' package, so that unless said matchheads were covered in some rway, the same would be likely to' contact with objects in the users pockets. To wholly cover thev match heads,2 when the package is closed, I provide a wall 11. -Said wall 11 consists of a Hap `formed onthe edge 12 of lthe cover strip 1. Said flap is inwardly folded as at 13 land thence outwardly folded as at 100 yin actual phys1cal contact therewith, said wall is maintained in lits substantially rigid `form and acts to wholly close the endof the package whereat the match heads are lThe edge 18 of the wall 15 isosuitably curved or shaped so as to conform to the curvature of the cover Hap 49, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, when said flap is closed.

In 'Figure 5, I have shown a modification of'my invention wherein a match book of the lconventional type is shown. This bookcis provided with the usual cover strip 20` inturned flap 21 and match strip 22. In a match book of theA character disclosed in Figure 5, the matches in the strip 22 are exposed at the sides of the package. I avoid such exposure of the matches by providing thelongitudinal sides 23 and 24 of the package with lateral wings or extensions 25 and 26 which are folded inwardly and upwardly as disclosed to provide upright protective consisting of an infolded win onthe cover strip having its base fastene to the cover strip and its body portion projecting outwardly from its point of securement.

Thus, it is impossible for the'matches to be accidentally ignited in the pocket, since the heads thereof cannot be brought into contact with any object carried by the match user.
