SLICING MACHINE Filed June 26, 1929 Patented May 3, 1932 testina rar WALLACE E. VGLFF, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TOAAMERICAN SLICINQ.L lli/[ACI-IIlXl'El COMPANY, OF SHIGAGG, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK SLICING MACHINE Application filed June 26, 1929. Serial No. 373,705.
My invention relates to a slicing machine and particularly to a slicing machine in which is employed a rotary knife, which may be motor driven, with which is used a work support guided for movement across the face and time to time in the course ofthe specification and claims.
I illustrate my invention more or less diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a front elevation;
Figure 2 is a partial front elevation;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Figure l.
Like parts are indicated by like symbols throughout the specification and drawings.
A generally indicates any suitable base or frame member, mounted upon the supports Sil. B2 is a rotary knife which may be rotated by any suitable means not herein shown.
C generally indicates the guard plate for the front of the knife, the arcuate edge of which, C1, penetrates the recess B5 in the front of the knife.
I) generally indicates a gauge plate structure which may be moved, in any suitable manner, for example by rotation of the control knob D1, toward and away from the cutting plane in order to adjust the thickness of the slices. Y
I illustrate the carriage H, slidable along the track El which is provided with side plates H1 H1. Formed in such plate is an upper slot H2, herein shown as horizontal, a short lower slot H3, and an inclined connect- 'l ing slot Ht extending from the slot H2 intermediateits ends. The plates H1 are provided with depending portions I-I5 in guiding relationship with the guide track E3. Adjustment of the carriage is made possible by means of the adjusting screws HG.
Mounted on the carriage H is the meat support generally indicated as I with the main meat supporting member I1 and the flange I2. Depending from the bottom of t the member I1 are two pairs of arms I3 I4,
of unequal length there being a pin I5 at the end of each said arm, such pins being positioned to penetrate the above mentioned slots. I6 is a locking or set screw which may be mounted on one of the arms.
It will be realized that whereas I have described and Vshown a practicalY and operative device, nevertheless many changes might be made in the size, shape, number and disposi- Vtion of parts without departing from the:l
spirit of my invention. I therefore wish my wdescription and drawings to be taken as in -a broadfsense illustrative and diagrammatic rather than as limiting me to my specific showing.l
The use and operation of my invention are as follows: I
In slicing machines of the type herein described it is desirable to have a work support,
movable with the carriage across the face of i the knife, which support is adjustable in relation to the carriage. Some articles, such as bread, bacon and the like are best sliced when resting upon a broad horizontal surface such as that of the member I1. support is tilted inthe position in which it is shown in Figure 2, the space is insufficient to receive a piece of bacon for de-rinding or a piece of bread for de-crusting. The length of the lbacon or of the bread loaf is such that if it is positioned on the carriage whenthe carriage is in the tilted position, the upper portion of the 'balcon or bread engages the cover member D10 and cannot loe-moved into cutting engagement withthe knife.
On the other hand, as when cutting small articles or more or less soft articles such as sausage, it is advantageous to employ a trough which is V-shaped in cross-section, a trough such as is provided by the work support when it is in the tilted position, as shown in Figure 2. I obtain both results by providing a work support whichv may, atthe election of the operator, `be positioned in horizontal position or in inclined position.
l/Vhen the set screw I6 is loosened, the support may be tilted into the position in which it is shown in Figure 2, with all of the pins I5 penetra `ting the upper slot H2, or the pins on the long arms I4 may be guided along the inii l/Vhen the meat,
1&2 1,856,939
clined slot H4 to rest finally in the lower slot H3. The screw I6 serves to lock the support in position.
In some of the claims I have employed the term tilting or tiltable By this I Wish to be understoodas meaning the characteristic movement 4of the Work supportas shown in the specification and drawings', andxvhich Ythe Work support may be moved to different angles; but is not rotatably mounted in' the sense that the support is rotated about an axis.
I claim: l.
