5 Claims.
The present invention relates to slicing machines and particularly to the type of slicing machine in which the carriage and knife are moved relative to each other by manual means, the knife being driven independently of the carriage.
One object of this invention is to provide a' releasable carriage mounting. whereby the carriage may be removed for inspection, cleaning, or the like and replaced with the minimum amount of effort in juxtaposition with the guides of the slicing machine.
Another object of this invention relates to a novel form of releasable connection between the supporting surface for the substance in a direction away from the cutting plane of the knife whereby when a long substance is to be sliced, the supporting surface of the carriage can be extended to adequately support the same. This extension for the carriage can be moved into an inoperative position entirely out. of the way of the operator. I
Other. objects of this invention will appear hereinafter as the description thereof proceeds, the novel features, arrangements, and combinations being clearly set forth in the appended claims.

The reference character l5 represents the base of a slicing machine and I6 and I! represent guides upon which a bearing member l8 slides. The bearing member l8 as is perhaps best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5 has-a sleeveportion 19 embracing the guide l1 and a flanged roller 20 whichirides on the upper surface of the guide IS. The guide I1 is provided with a cover portion 2| which extends over the entire operative surface of said guide and is integrally formed; with the brackets which support the guide H. The slicing machine carriage is indicated by the reference character 22 and has an upper substance support which is substantially V- shaped in cross-section with both substance'engaging surfaces sloping upwardly from a hori- 25 zontal plane as is clearly illustrated inFig. 2. This carriage is providedwith uprights 23' and 24 which slidably support the clamp.25.f.or,movement toward and from the supporting surface of said carriage 22. The uprights 23 and. 24 are 30 carried by a bearing member 26 arranged par tially beneath the substance support and guided by the guides 21 and 2B which extend substantially perpendicularly to the cutting plane of the knife 29 which is driven by the motor 50 by any 35 suitable gearing such as the belt 30 illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. The clamp can be. advanced toward the cutting plane of the knife by manual pressure applied to the handle 3| thereof or can be'fed by spring pressure acting on the bearing member 26. i v
The slicing machine is provided with a gauge plate 32 which has the substance engaging surface thereof extending substantially parallel to the cutting plane of the knife for gauging the thickness of the slices to be formed. The knife 29 is recessed at 33 as is clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, and a guard plate 34 having ribs 35 thereon is arranged within the recess 33 and has the substance engaging portion. thereof which includes the surfaces of said ribs arranged substantially in the cutting plane of the'knife when the guard plate is in operative position.
The guardplate as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 the lower end thereof having recesses at the opposite ends thereof into which the. adjustable pivots 38 extend. The position of the gauge plate is adjusted by means of the operating knob 92 illustrated in Fig. 1 which knob is threaded on the end of the rod 93 secured to the gauge plate 32.
In Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8, I have shown the upper portion of the guard 2| flat on top and to this fiat portion, there is secured a plate I20. This plate which may be formed as an integral portion of the guard if desired, is adapted to support a substance when the carriage of the slicing machine is removed from the reciprocating frame to which the carriage is removably connected. Screws l2l or the like may be used in securing the plate to the guard. This arrangement is particularly useful when it is desired to remove the rind from bacon or to cut the crusts from a loaf of bread. The plate I20 while relatively narrow is of suflicient width to adequately support the substance during the slicing operation, it being understood that the substance is pressed against the gauging plate by hand, and reciprocated along the plate by manual pressure applied thereto parallel to the cutting plane of the knife.
Obviously those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains may make various changes in the particular arrangement of the parts shown in the accompanying drawings without departing from the spirit of this invention and therefore I do not wish to be limited except as hereinafter set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to obtain by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A slicing machine comprising a bearing support for a carriage, a carriage adapted to be releasably supported on said bearing and having cooperating bearing surfaces thereon engaging corresponding bearing surfaces on said bearing, projecting pins on said bearing extending substantially parallel to said cooperating bearing surfaces, downwardly extending portions on said carriage having recesses to receive said pins, and clamping means acting in the general direction in which said pins extend for drawing the downwardly extending projections on said carriage firmly into engagement with said pins for preventing upward movement of said carriage relative to said bearing, said clamping means comprising a slotted plate on said bearing and a clamping screw on said carriage, the shank of which is adapted to enter said slot and the head of which is adapted to engage a cooperating seat on said plate and prevent movement of said shank out of said slot and to prevent movement of said carriage away from said bearing.
2. In a slicing machine, the combination with a bearing for the substance carriage having a plurality of upwardly extending openings, a substance carriage having downwardly extending projections thereon extending into said openings, beveled seats on the under side of said bearing surrounding said openings, and cooperating similarly formed seats on said downwardly extending projections for cooperating with the seats surrounding said openings to prevent upward movement of said carriage away from said hearing when said seats are in engagement with each other, and clamping means acting in a direction substantially parallel to the meeting surfaces of r the carriage and bearing, said last mentioned means being mounted on said carriage and cooperating with a sloping surface on said bearing for drawing said support and bearing firmly toward each other and for drawing said seats surrounding said openings and on said pins against each other when the clamping pressure is applied.
3. A slicing machine comprising a slidable bearing, a support for a carriage on the bearing, a carriage adapted to be releasably supported on said bearing, cooperating bearing surfaces between the carriage and the bearing including a pair of interengaging members for positioning and centering the carriage on one side with respect to the slide bearing, and a clamping member comprising a rotatable member engageable with the carriage and bearing member on the other side of the carriage at a point substantially equidistant from the interengaging centering members for clampingly urging the bearing member and carriage into locking position, said clamping means operating in a direction substantially parallel to the meeting surface of the carriage and bearing, the clamping member drawing the bearing and support toward each other and drawing the seats of the interengaging members against each other when clamping pressure is applied to the clamping member.
4. A slicing machine comprising a carriage having substance support bearing members on the carriage below the support, supporting means carried by the bearing members and slidably mounted therein, and a substance supporting member arranged on a side edge of the substance support on the carriage and operatively fastened the carriage below the support, supporting means carried by the bearing members and slidably mounted therein, and a substance supporting member arranged on a side edge of the substance support on the carriage and operatively fastened to the supporting means whereby the supporting member may be moved from a point immediately adjacent the said side edge of the substance support on the carriage to a point remote therefrom, and providing a substance support for supporting substance extending beyond the said edge of the said substance support of the carriage, the said substance supporting member having its upper supporting surface thereof substantially in the same horizontal plane as the first named substance support.
