SLICER Filed April l, 1941 Lnfen Patented June 9, 1942 UNITED STATES TEN'E orifice 7 1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to a device to be used for vegetables such as potatoes, cucumbers, onions, and the like.
The main object of the invention is to provide a slicer which is adapted for economically slicing the vegetables horizontally to the requisite thickness.
Another object of the invention Vis to provide a slicer adapted for slicing the vegetables or other objects horizontally and vertically to the required thickness.
A further object of the invention is to provide a slicer which can be easily handled and readily applied without the necessity of special skill and which will not require frequent repair and replacement.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a Slicer which is of simple construction and may be produced along lines convenient for low cost manufacture, and which will at the same time be highly eflicient for carrying out the purposes for which it is intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacriiicing any of the advantages of the invention.
For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of the invention, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, the invention, its mode of construction and assembly, and many of its advantages, will be readily understood and appreciated.
Referring to the drawing, in which similar characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing,-
Fig. l is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the grader.
Referring to the drawing more specifically by characters of reference, I designates the body portion, and I4 the channel-like slide,
The body portion i comprises the side walls or members 2 and 3, with flanges 3 4 thereon.
The top plate 5 extends about two-thirds of the length of the body portion I, having a straight outer edge S, While the inner edge of same terminates in a bevelled edge ,1, set atan angle of 32 recessed at its upper side 3, for the reception of the horizontal cutting blade or knife 9, it being securely hel-d. Y
The side walls 2 and 3 have the leg El) formed at their bottoms adjacent to the front and rear, with an open space I I therebetween.
The body portion I, being open at its bottom, permits the device to be positioned'upon a receptacle, into which the sliced vegetables are discharged.
The side wall 2 has the slots I2-I2, disposed at an angle of 45. The side wall 3 has the slots I3-I 3, disposed at an angle of 45.
The said slide I 4 comprises th'e top plate I5, having a straight outer edge I6, the inner edge of which terminates in a bevelled edge I1, set at an angle of 32, and two vertically apart side ilanges I8 and i9, the extremities of which are substantially bent outwardly at an angle of 45, forming the guides 25--20 and 2I-2I, respectively, moving freely and uniformly in the slots I2-I2 and l3-I3, respectively, to permit the spacing apart vertically of the bevelled edges of the body portion and the slide, to the requisite thickness of the slices to be taken from the vegetable.
The bracket 22, one flange 23 of which is secured to the under side of the top plate I5, adjacent to the bevelled edge I1, while its other flange 24 has a series of notches 25 thereon for the reception of a grader 26, which has the lower portion 21 and the upper portion 28, with a series of cutting means 29 thereon, set an an angle of 32, being spaced apart the requisite distance to form therebetween slices of the required thickness of the vegetable to be sliced.
The lower portion 21 has the arms 33, 3G thereon, permitting the removal of the grader.
The bracket 3I, one ilange 32 of which is secured to the under side of the top plate I5, has its other ange 33, having a centrally disposed slot 34.
The threaded spindle 35 is rotatably mounted in the hub 36 of the bracket 31, the bottom ange 38 of which is secured on the inner surface 39 of the cross member the flanges 4I, 4I, being secured within the side walls 2 and 3, respectively, adjacent to the front of the device.
The handwheel 42 is securely held on the outer end of the threaded spindle 35, the inner end of which is constrained to move in the slot 34, by means of the washers 43 and 44, being secured by the screw 45 into the end of the said spindle.
Assembly of the device mounted on its inner surface 39, is secured by its anges 4I, 4I, within the side members 2 and 3; the threaded spindle 35 is rotated along in the hub 36, until its end, having the washer 43 thereon, is projecting through the slot 34, when the washer 44 is secured by the screw 45 thereinto.
The operation of the Slicer The device with its open bottom is set upon a receptacle into which the sliced vegetables are discharged when the handwheel 42 is rotated anti-clockwise until the guides 20, 20, slidingly and uniformly moving in the slots I2 and I3, respectively, position, vertically apart, the top plate I5, of the slide I4, from the top plate 5, of the body portion I, a distance equal to the desired thickness of the slice that is to be taken from the vegetable, which is manually moved on the top of the slide I4 against the cutting blade 9.
Positioning the grader 26 in the notches 25 of the bracket 22, the handwheel 42 being rotated anti-clockwise until positioning the top plate I5 of the slide I4 relatively from the top plate 5 of the body portion I, a distance equal to the desired thickness of the slice that is to be taken from the vegetable, it will ensure therebetween vertical slices of the required thickness in adi Vance of the vegetable contacting the cutting blade against which it is manually moved.
I claim: In a vegetable slicing device, the combination of a xed body portion equipped with top flanges, a horizontally sliding channel-like portion and a vertically removable, adjustable grader having an arm on each end, said xed bodyY portion bearing at its inner end a rigidly held slicing edge, said horizontally sliding channel-like portion having disposed at its inner `end a vertical bracket, said bracket comprising a series of notches, said notches engaging corresponding portions of the lower part of the said grader while its two end arms rest on the top flanges of the fixed body portion.
