This invention relates to certain novel improvements in articles of womens clothing and more particularly to a fastening device, and has for its principal object the provision 5 of an improved device of this character which will be highly etlicient in use and economical in manufacture.

The salient object of my invention is to provide an improved device for fastening undergarments to a shoulder strap which is designed so that all under garments worn by a woman may be attached by means of the device and held in a secure7 convenient and comfortable manner.

Another object of my invention is topprovide a `device of the above named character which will eliminate any chance of irritation of the iiesh of thewearer. Y

Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above named character in which a perfectly smooth surface will come in Contact with the flesh of the wearer.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above named character in which during use no metal part or parts come into contact with the flesh of the wearer.

A. still furtherobject of my invention is to provide a shoulder strap which will eliminate the necessity of a plurality of shoulder straps.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists inthe novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter to be described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:

designed to litinto the slots in the tabs supported by the shoulder strap;

In the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred forms of construction for my device, 1 indicates an elas- 60 tic strap of any suitable quality including an end portion inserted through an opening 4 in a tab 2 and fastened as shown at 5, or in any other suitable manner. This elastic strap l V is preferably only a few inchesl in length and 65 is fastened to a cloth strap 21, in any suitable manner, as by sewing. Tab 2 may be made of metal, pyroXylin, Celluloid, or other like suitable material. Supported by the cloth strap 21, in a manner to be described herein- 70 after, is a tab 3 of similar material andv design to tab 2. The end of the cloth strap 21 opposite the end joined to the elastic strap is inserted through a buckle in the manner shown in Fig.- 1 and illustrated in detail in 75 Fig. 3, thecloth portion 21 passing, asshown, under the end bar 7 of the buckle 6, as best illustrated in Fig. 8, then passing over the center bar 8 of the buckle, and" finally passing out under the end bar 9 of the buckle 80 6. The cloth portion 21 is then passed through the opening 4 in the tab 3 and brought back under and over the center 8 of the buckle, the free end of the cloth por- 5 tionl 2Y resting adjacent the main body por# tion thereof and projecting downward toward the end bar V9 of the buckle. It is thus apparent, as shown in Fig. 3, that when in use the metallic parts of the buckle do not `90 come in contact with the wearers flesh. It is likewise apparent, as is also shown in Fig. 3 that tension on the cloth strapg21` exerts pressure on the free end of the cloth portion y* wound under and over the center bar 8 of the 95 buckle 6 and in this manner slipping is prevented. My shoulder strap may b e adjusted to any desiredlength by sliding the cloth portion 21 thereofup or down over the center'bar 8 of the buckle and then equalizing the 10i? leigth of adjustment at the opening 4 in the ta 3.

The tabs 2 and 3 which as stated above are preferably made of pyroxylin, Celluloid, or the like, have slots 12 formed therein. rJjhe slots 12 are formed so as to present an external opening substantially wide at one end but having a constricted neck portion 13 as best shown in Fig. 1. Extending inwardly from the external slot opening and substantially as wide as the widest part of the external opening of the slot and somewhat longer than the greatest length of the slot opening, is a recess 24 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.

Fig. 4 represents a fastener 14 which is preferably made of pyroxylin, Celluloid, or like material, but may be made of metal. rlhis fastener has openings 15 formed therein which permit the fastener 14 to be sewed or otherwise fastened to a womans undergarment. Projecting from the main body portion 16 of the fastener 14 and substantially at right angles therefrom is a substantially cylindrical shank 17, on the outer end of which and integral therewith, is mounted a cylindrical knob 18 of greater diameter than the shank 17.

In use; for example, when the fastener 14 is sewn to a womans undergarment, on@ of said fasteners 14 being sewn to the front portion of the undergarment and another of said fasteners 14 being sewn to the rear portion of said undergarment, one fastener on each side thereof, the knob 18 on one fastener, say the one attached to the front portion of the undergarment, is inserted into one of the slots generically indicated by 12 on tab 3, tabs 2 and 3 being suspended at opposite ends of the shoulder strap over the wearers shoulder, while the knob 18 on the other fastener attached to the back portion of the undergarment is inserted into one of the slots generically indicated by 12 on the tab 2, or into the center slot 12A. if only one fastener is attached at the front and back portions of the undergarment at each side thereof. The slots 12 are formed sufficiently deep to receive the knobs 18 and the shanks 17. The knobs 18 are retained within the slots 12, in the lower portion of said slots, by means of the overlying body portion 19 of the tabs as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and accidental release of the fasteners is thus prevented. Withdrawal is accomplished by slipping the shank 17 along the neck 13 of the slot and removing the knob 18 through the widest part 2() of the slot.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown fasteners 21 and 22 similar in construction to fastener 14 shown in Fig. 4 and described above but having more than one knob formed thereon, three knobs being shown on fastener 21 and two n fastener 22. These fasteners 21 and 22 are suitable for engaging a like number of slots 12 in the tabs 2 and 3. By sewing fastener 14, for example, to one undergarment and securing the knob thereon in the slot 12A, sewing fastener 22 to a second undergarment and securing the knobs thereon in slots 12B, and sewing fastener 21 to a third undergarment and inserting the knobs thereon in slots 12C, with similar fasteners at the front and back portions of the undergarments and at each side thereof and supported by tabs 2 and 3, my shoulder strap will hold and support all the undergarments worn by a woman, in a secure, convenient and comfortable manner with no irritation to the skin of the wearer. In the above illustration of the use of my invention I have shown one manner of engaging certain of the knobs 18 and fasteners 14, 21 and 22 with specified slots 12, but it is understood that this arrangement may be varied. Likewise I may vary other features of my invention. Thus, for example, 1 may eliminate the movable buckle entirely and insert a section of elastic between the'cloth portion 21 and tab 3. y

While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

A device for securing womens under-garments-to shoulder straps comprising a female element consisting of a tab adapted to be secured to a shoulder strap and having a plurality of bayonet slots therein arranged in rows with one of said slots in one of said rows offset from alignment with the other slots in said row, a plate adapted to be secured to an undergarment, and a knob on said plate engageable selectively in said slots for the purposes set forth.
