IMPROVEMEN'T lN STOVE-DOOR KNOBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,794, dated November 28, 1876 application filed November 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH OLMSTED, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Door Knobs; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification. v
My invention relates to knobs or handles to stove-doors, having as its object a hollow metallic knob so constructed or provided that the tendency and liability to be crushed or jammed experienced in tightly securing same to the door may be obviated.
A knob struck up from brass or other similar metal, of hollow conical form, is not in itself adapted to or capable of resisting the direct pressure passing in a line parallel with its length which is brought to bear upon its face and sides by the secure engagement of the handle to the door through the bolt unitin g the two.
My invention consists in the combination, with a hollow knob, of a tube adapted to receive and support the bolt attaching same to the door of a stove, so that the binding pressure of the bolt may exert its strain upon the tube and relieve the body of the knob from any compressing force.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents, in perspective, a knob provided with my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of same.
A is the knob or handle, made of any desired material, and preferably I use .brass. It is in two transverse parts or cross-sections, a b, engaged in any desired manner, the drawing showing one of them seated into an annular shoulder of the other, the projecting flange to which latter is brought down, so as to form an overlapping joint of same.
The inner or rearface of the knob may be slotted or perforated, as shown, or such perforations may beomitted, and the same may be said of the front section or face of the knob. Any rimming or folded edge construction may be given to the openings in the knob through which the bolt operates, or other immaterial variation may be made.
B is the tube passing centrally through the hollow knob, and connected therewith in any suitable manner, whereby the two are socurely attached, the drawing showing the tube as terminating, respectively, at either interior extremity of the knob in the direction of its length, and the'latter turned in upon same at the opening in its front face, against which bears the head of the bolt. But this latter formation does not affect the character of my invention, which consists, broadly, in providing by any means the hollow knob with a strengthening-tube for taking the compressing force of the bolt which secures the knob to a door. This tube is formed of any suitable metal, iron being very well adapted to such a use.
Any engaging device, such as the bolt 0, may be employed to fasten the knob to its door, and the head of the bolt thus obtains a firm and unyielding bearing against the longitudinal resistance of the rigid tube supporting same. The knob is thus brought in a tight and secure engagement with the face of the door to which it is attached, the nut c binding the two by a tapped thread upon the inner extremity of the bolt, which, latter is of length sufficient to pass in cross section through the door, and be secured to same by the nut brought up in close impact again t the interior surface of such door.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A stove-door knob or handle,;provided its door-fastening device substantially as and with a central strengthening-tubelocated for thepurpose described. i within the knob, and adapted to resist the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I crushing strain of the fastening bolt or. screw, have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th substantially as and for the purpose set forth. day of November, 1876.
2. The combination, witha stovedoo'r knob, JOSEPH OLMSTED. [L. 8.]
made in sections, as described, of a tube pass Witnesses: ing centrally through the same, and adapted to relieve the knob from the compression of STEPHEN SMITH, E. K. GLEZEN.
