Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,290, dated November 14, 1876 application filed August 27, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL LILIENTHAL, of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Holders for Rubber, Crayons, Ohalks, Clays, and for other purposes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists of a case or holder adapted to receive and retain a cake of rubber, tablet of chalk, 8150., which case is provided with lips or projections along its edge or edges, which are in contact with the material to be held; and, also, in details of construction, too particularly hereinafter set forth to need preliminary description.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of my improved holder, while Figs. 4 and 5 represent plan views of the plates composing it, and Figs. 6 and 7 views of its fastening-bolt.

Primarily, the device consists of a tube of such shape as to adapt it to receive a commercial cake of rubber, chalk, 850., one end or mouth of which tube is provided, along at least one of its edges, with projections, a flange or lip forming a ledge or protuberance, extending inwardly, so as to impinge upon the cake of rubber, which, by its elasticity, will yield sufficiently to permit its being forced past this ledge into the tube, and yet be retained by the ledge against displacement while being manipulated in erasing marks. Such a tube may be formed from metal in any of the common modes of swaging and bending metal. It may be as well made from hard rubber, wood, or similar substance afl'ording the proper degree of strength. In its use for holding a fragile material, as chalk, or a nonelastic material, as a polishing-tablet, I construct it in two parts, which are adjustable, as will now be described.

A plate of suitable material, as at A, Fig. 5, is bent upon the dotted lines, so as to form the sides 0, Fig. 3, of the body of the tube or holder. The cap B is formed from a plate, as

shown in Fig. 4, having upon one side and its ends narrow right -angular flanges formed upon them by bending the same upon the dotted lines shown in said Fig. 4. The flange F, which is on one side of this cap B, serves to keep it in proper position upon the body A, while the flanges G G on its opposite ends project to a slight degree over the mouth of the tube, and constitute the means for'retain ing the chalk, polisher, or rubber in place.

The edge E of this plate is long enough to project beyond one side wall, 0, of the tube, and is chamf'ered 05, so as to form a knife-edge, which may be used in sharpening the chalk, or as an eraser. These parts A and B may be secured together by various means.

If it is desired to construct the tubeof two parts permanently secured together, a rivet may form the means of union; but if it is required that there shall be an adjustment of one upon the other, a screw may be employed. While a screw-bolt, c d, is illustrated, any other form may be used.

By loosing the plate or cap B a piece or tablet of fragile chalk may be introduced into one end of the holder, and the plateor cap screwed into place, so that the lip or flange F will impinge upon the chalk and clamp it securely in place. These holdingflanges may, of course, be provided on two or more of the sides of the mouth of the holder.

What I claim is- 1. A marking or erasive tablet holder, consisting of a tubeor case, one side plate of which has combined with it a knife, substantially as described.

2. A marking or erasive tablet holder, consisting of a tube having an oblong open end or month, one side of which is provided with an inwardly-projecting lip or flange, substantially as described.

3. A marking or erasive tablet holder, the oblong mouth whereof is provided with an inwardly-projecting flange, constructed in two parts, adjustable one upon the other, substantially as described.

4. The combination of the plate A, having sides 0, plate B, having flange F, and adjusting-screw c, substantially as described.
