IMPROVEMENT IN PENCl-LS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,272, dated September 22, 1874 application filed July 22,1874.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI L. TOWER, of
Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient means for holding a rubber eraser, and attaching the same to a lead-pencil, in such manner that it may be used upon the head of the pencil for erasing, or removed therefrom and placed upon the point to protect the same when not in use, and also admit of the adjustment of the rubber eraser within the holder as often as its projecting end is worn away by being drawn or pushed farther out, and yet held firmly when in use against the tendency to displace it, until entirely worn out; and it consists of a metallic cylindrical holder, open upon one side its entire length, forming a cylindrical spring, one end which is drawn inwardly, so as to present a curved projection upon the inner surface of such end, which impresses the rubber eraser at this point, and thereby secures it in position for use, such rubber eraser being constructed cylindrical, and of a diameter slightly larger than the greatest interior diameter of the cylindric spring-holder; and, in order to facilitate the adjustment of the rubber eraser in the holder, I construct the inwardly-curved end, commencing at the side opening, by forming one corner shorter than the other. so it shall present a spirallyformed end, which acts as a screw in connection with the rubber, as, by turning one part and holding the other, the rubber may be forced in or out by the action of the inwardlycurved spiral end of the holder upon rubber eraser. To allow more elasticity to the end of the holder, a slot may be formed opposite the open side.
Figure 1 is a view of my invention applied to a pencil as in use with the eraser. Fig. 2 is a view of the same as a point-protector. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of holder and eraser removed from the pencil. Fig. 4 is a vertical central section of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a similar view of Fig. 1.
A is a lead-pencil of usual construction. B is a metal cylindrical spring holder and protector, having an inwardly curvature at its end 0, one corner, 0, being cut shorter than the other, so it shall act as a female screw upon the rubber eraser E, when it is. revolved within the same, it being cylindrical, and of such diameter as to fit snugly into the same. The opposite end of the cylindric spring holder and protector being formed with an outwardprojecting lip or rim, which comes in contact with the pocket or book, and prevents its slipping from the same, as well as from the fingers, when in use.
The holder B may be formed of sheet steel or brass, and nickle-plated to prevent corrosion and give it an ornamental appearance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a protector and holder for attaching erasers to pencils, consisting of the cylindrical spring-holder B, having the inwardly-curved end 0 and shortened corner 0 thereof, so as to act as a screwthread' upon the era-sive material, when constructed and arranged for holding the rubber eraser E, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
