To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWIN P. McOoLLoM, of David City, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Penholders, of which the fol lowing is a specification.

' My invention is an improved pen holder having for an object to provide simple means whereby the pen may be conveniently discharged from the holder without soiling thev hands, wherebythe pen may be conveniently incased and put in the pocket when not in use and whereby the finger hold may be adj usted with respect to the'pen point and theinvention has for further objects other improvements and consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side view of my pen holder the pen being in position for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the casing sleeve being shown in'sectioi'rand the pen being adjusted back into the sleeve so the holder can be carried in the pocket. Fig. 3 is a cross section on about line 33 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the holder pushed forward to position to receive or discharge .a pen, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the holder proper.

The pen holder consists of the holder proper A and the sleeve B. The holder proper A is preferably formed of a rod or bar of metal and is provided with a compressible pen clamp and with a spring whereby the holder proper is held in any desired adjustment in the sleeve. Now manifestly this clamp and spring may be efiected in various ways, but it is preferred to make the holder proper as shown in which it is bent to form the compressible pen clamp and the spring by which the holder is secured in any adjustment within the sleeve. In so bending the holder proper I form it with the return or intermediate wing 1, the bend 2 at the end of said wing 1 aiding in forming the spring by which the holder is held in the sleeve. The outer wing 3 is bent and extended forward from the rear end of the wing 1 and is separated sufiiciently from wing 1 to receive a pen freely between them; The seat so formed for the pen may be rounded or concaved or the holder proper form thereat what may be termed a head which slides in the sleeve and may be set at difierent points therein enabling the adjustment of the pen entirely within the sleeve or with its point any desired distance beyond the sleeve. To facilitate the entrance of 'the said head into the sleeve and also to enable the shank 4 of the holder to be set centrally between the sides of said head I form a bend 5 at the union. of said shank with the head such bend forming aninclined guide which aids in guiding the head into the open end of the sleeve. When the head is pushed forward out of the sleeve the pen may be readily inserted or displaced when rusted or corroded.

- The sleeve B which may be of metal, gutta percha, wood, or other suitable material is provided centrally in its rear end with a contracted opening through which the holder shank protrudes. This holder shank may be provided with graduations to serve as a meas- .ure and for ruling purposes and its extrembe flattened and sharpened to serve as an eraser as will be understood from Fig. 2. A suitable protecting tip C may be applied to the extremity of the shank as shown in Fig. 1 and such tip may be shaped to suit either form of end as will be readily understood' It will be noticed that the barrel of the sleeve B is of uniform size throughout so that the drawing vof the head and pen entirely .within it does not injure the tension of the said head.

Having thus described my invention, what Patent, is

1. An improved pen holder consisting of the holder proper formed of a rod having a head provided with the intermediate and re- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters turn wings having the pen seat between them 7 and the sleeve sliding upon said head and adapted to incase the same and compress it to clamp the pen all substantially as set forth.

2. An improved pen holder having a compressible pen clamp and a casing sleeve in which said holder slides and by which its clamp is compressed such sleeve being sufficiently long to permit the incasing of the pen therein when not in use substantially as set forth.

3. An improved pen holder having a sleeve and a holder proper sliding in the said sleeve and having its end formed to provide a spring by which the holder may be held in the sleeve substantially as set forth.

4. An improved pen holder having a holder proper having the two lapped sections forming the pen clamp and the spring and the sleeve fitting upon said holder proper substantially as set forth.

5. A pen holder having its holder proper bent from a rod or bar of metal forming the rearwardly projected intermediate Wing and set forth.
