Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
LEROY S. BUFFINGTON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
IMPROVEMENT lN DESKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l83,793, dated October 31, 1876; application filed March 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEROY S. BUFFINGTON, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in office-desks or secretaries, its object being to produce, in combination with a suitable working-table, a folding chest or chests, in which all available room may be occupied by pigeon-holes, drawers, and other receptacles for books, papers, and other articles, in order that a larger number of such receptacles may-be arranged in a limited space, in such position that the various parts may be opened or closed as desired without disturbing the contents, and which, when opened, will present the said receptacles in convenient position for ready access thereto by the occupant of the desk.
My invention consists in a desk composed of an upper and lower part, A and B, having rectangular shelved or pigeon-holed compartments 0 O E E, the former hinged by the front and the latter by the rear outer corner to the main frame, the lower part of said frame being provided with recesses D, to receive the lower hinged sections, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved desk or secretary, partly open. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation, and Fig. 3 represents a side elevation, of the desk.
The letter A represents the upright closet or chest, and B the desk proper, the top of which forms the work-table. Said chest or closet is about half the Width of the desk proper, and is adapted to rest or be secured upon the top of the same, and is provided with pigeon-holes, drawers, or other receptacles for books, papers, and other articles, which receptacles may be arranged in any convenient manner to suit the requirements of the trade. The letter 0 represents two boxdike receptacles or chests, of about the same width as the closet A, and half the length of the same, said receptacles or chests being hinged at the end of the closet A, in such manner that, when closed, they will meet at the center of said closet and completely and securely close the same, forming doors thereto. The said chests 0 may, like the closet A, be provided with pigeon-holes, drawers, or other receptacles for papers, in similar manner to the closet. The desk proper, B, is provided with a flat top, and with two or more compartments, D D, below. The end compartments D are open at their sides and in front, and in them are fitted the folding chests E, which are hinged at their outer back edges to the back of the desk, as indicated at d, in such manner that when opened out their inner sides will be parallel with the front of the desk. Said chests are provided with pigeon-holes, drawers, or other receptacles, arranged in any convenient manner, opening at the inner sides of the same, so that they will be properly exposed when the chests are thrown back. The intermediate space or compartment D may be provided with pigeon-holes, drawers, or the like, opening either to the front or at each side opposite the inner sides of the chests D when closed. When opening to the front, the compartment D may be left open or provided with doors, as desired.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a desk consisting of an upper and lower part, A and B, having rectangular shelved or pigeon-holed compartments 0 O E E, the former hinged by the front and the latter by the rear outer corner to the main frame, the lower part of said frame being provided with recesses D, to receive the lower hinged sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
LEROY S. BUFFINGTON.
