COMBINED WRITING-DESK, BUREAU, AND BOOK AND DRESSING CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,877, dated March 7, 1893. I Application filed August 19, 1892- Serial No. 443,490. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NEAL P. SHULIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte City, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Writing- Desk, Bureau, and Book and Dressing Case, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of household furniture, known as bureaus or dressing-cases, and consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The objects of my invention are first, to provide a combined writing desk, bureau, book and dressing-case, which shall be com pact in form, and neat and attractive in ap-' pearance; second, such a piece of furniture which shall contain a secret apartment, in which articles may be concealed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art, to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, represents a perspective view of myinvention, (with one of the drawers to the bureau removed,and with the door to thedressing-case open, to show the interior thereof,) as it appears when ready for use as a writingdesk. And Fig. 2, is a plan sectional View, taken on line 2, 2, of Fig. 1.

Similar letters refer to like parts throughout both the views of the drawings.

A, represents the main or outer frame, and is made of any suitable size, form and material, but preferably of wood, and rectangular in shape as shown in the drawings, and may be mounted on casters or rollers a, in order that it may be moved from one place to another with ease.

The frame A, is divided into two compartments B, and B, by an upright partition 0, which extends from the front of the frame A, to the rear thereof, and from its top to bottom, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings.

The lower portion of the compartment B, is provided with a number of drawers D, which fit into suitable compartments d, be-

tween the partition O, and the side A, of the frame A. These compartments are formed by extending a number of cross pieces I), horizontally from the side A, to the partition 0, as is ordinarily done in cabinet work.

In order to cause the drawers to move smoothly and without impediment, or in other words to guide them in their compartments, I form them on their lower surfaces and about their middle,with grooves 0, extending from the front to the rear, which grooves fit over cleats or strips 6, which are placed'and secured in each of the compartments (1, and extend from the front to the rear of the frame A, as is obvious, by reference to Fig. 1, of the drawings. It will also be seen and understood that the cleats e, are somewhat higher than the cleats e, which extend in the same direction,but which are placed at the sides of the compartments d, and fit into corresponding grooves, (not shown,) in the bottom sides of the drawers. This construction and arrangement, provides a longitudinal bearing at the center of the drawers, which prevents them from,wabbling or binding at their sides.

Directly above the compartment B, and extending from one side to the other of the frame A, is hinged in any suitable manner a flat lid or cover E, which may be provided with a covering or pad e and which when in its lowered position, as shown in Fig. 1, acts as atable ordesk upon which to write. When not desired to be used for writing, it may be raised to a vertical position, when it will form the covering or door for the compartment B and fora portion of the compartment or wardrobe B which latter is located on the opposite side of the partition 0, from the compartments B, and B and between said partition and the side A of the main or outer frame.

As is clearly seen in the drawings, the Wardrobe B extends from the top to the bottom of the frame A, and is provided with a number of hooks f, upon which to hang garments or articles of wearing apparel. The upper portion of the wardrobe, or that portion above the desk E, is provided with a door E, which is hinged to the side A of the frame A, and when closed, presents an outer surface, which is provided with false drawers, and door to correspond with the front appearance of the compartment B as is clearly shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

The compartment B is provided with a number of drawers D, for the reception of paper, envelopes, pencils, &c. which extend horizontally from the front of the ease or frame A, toward the rear thereof, and is divided by means of an upright partition into another compartment B which is preferably provided with two upright or vertical drawers D which are formed with vertical hand-holds d and one of which is shown in Fig. 1, as partly withdrawn. I

A portion of the front of the compartment B is closed by means of a door E while the rear thereof is provided with a transverse vertical partition, one section C of which is rigidly secured, while the other 0 is movable, and forms the secret compartment or recess B access to which may be obtained by opening the door E and sliding the panel or section 0 of the partition to the position, as indicated at g, by dotted lines.

It is obvious that the frame or case A, may be extended above the top of the compartments B and B and formed into a receptacle H, for books and other articles, the front of which may be open or provided with mirror-doors h, or if desired plain glass doors.

As shown in Fig. 1, thelower portion of the compartment B, is formed with a cover H, having false drawers to correspond in appearance with the lower portion of the front of the compartment B, or bureau.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
