KITCHEN-CABINET.
SIECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,590, dated May 21, 1889.
Application filed July 19, 1888- Seria'l No. 280,365. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LU HOUSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shockey, in the county of Stevens and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in kitchen-cabinets; and it consists in the 0011- struction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cabinet from the front with the doors opened. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of the cabinet. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the par'tingstrip, showing the rabbet for the reception of the piece at the front of the bread-board.
All the compartments and drawers of the cabinet open frontward, so that it is very convenient in use and may be placed against the wall. I
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the casing of the cabinet, of general rectangular form, and having the legs a a at its corners provided with the casters a, so that it can be readily moved from point to point. The casing consists of the lower and wider portion, B, and the narrower upward exten sion, B, rising from the back of said portion. The lower portion, B, is provided with a front, 1;, representing false doors, for the sake of ornament. D D are the doors of said portion, situated on the top thereof in front of the ex tension B. The said doors are hinged at their outer edges and meet centrally when closed, and when opened they rest upon brackets 61 cl, secured to the ends of the portion B just below their outer edges, so that they are horizontal, and serve as tables to be used in connection with the bread-board, hereinafter described, when the latter is drawn out. The portion B is divided by vertical partitions into the compartments or bins E, E, and E to hold, respectively, three different grades of flour, or flour, meal, and bread, or any other materials that may be desired. The two former are large enough to insert therein a whole bag of flour or meal, so that large quantities of the commodities named can be stored therein. I
F is the bread-board sliding in between horizontal partitions f f at the lower end of the extension B, which partitions and a parting-strip, B are so situated that the breadboard on which the dough is made cannot be drawn outward until the doors D D are opened. As the upper edge of a piece, f {which is secured to the front of the board F, lies in a rabbet, B in said parting-strip B the inner edges of said doors, when the latter are closed, rest against said piece f which is of great importance in transportation. WVhen the bread-board is drawn out, its front edge impinges against the front of the portion B below its upper edge, f, and is stopped thereby. WVhen the doors D are closed, their outer or front edges rest against the same and hold the bread-board and a stationary drawer attached thereto and prevent their striking and racking the adjacent parts when the cabinet is moved. 1
As the extension B has only about half the width of the portion B, the bread-board when pulled out fits'between the open doors and closes over the bins E, E, and E G is a drawer attached to the right corner of the bread-board below and in front of the same, and g is a hinged door in the front of the portion B, which, when turned outward, permits the said drawer to slide out with the bread-board, so that when said board is out the doors D form stands or tables on each side thereof, and the drawer G, containing the rolling-pin, cake-cutters, &c., stands in front and on one side of the board.
H II are drawers that slide in between suitable partitions in the extension B, j 11st above the bread-board, which drawers are preferably three in number, the central one being the largest and having two compartments for spoons and knives and forks, respectively. These drawers H rest upon an ornamental parting-strip, which forms a support for their lower front edges.
The drawer to the left has three compartments, which, preferably, hold mustard, cinnamon, and ginger, respectively, and the one on the right has also three compartments, holding cloves, allsp'ice, and pepper. The ex tension B has the doors I hinged at their outer edges and meeting centrally, and is divided by suitable longitudinal and vertical partitions into compartments, the highest, J, of
, obtain flour or meal from the bins, the doors D must be opened and the bread-board slid in under the upper section, B.
The device is thus seen to be very eon1- plete, and will be found useful in any business.
Having described my invention, I claim- In k h nabin he mbination, with the portion B, the extension B, the hinged doors D, and supporting-brackets d, of the bread-board F, the drawer G, secured to, one i of the front corners of the said board, and
The I the hinged door 9 on the front of the portion B, and registering with the drawer G, substantially as specified.
2. A kitchen-cabinet comprising the portion 13, divided into bins and having doors hinged to its sides adapted to close the bins, and brackets to support the hinged doors when the latter are open, and provided with a sliding bread-board and a drawer attached thereto and slightly in advance of the same, said portion B having a door constructed in its front face, designed to open and allow the drawer to protrude and permit the breadsion B, provided with drawers in its lower part, and divided into compartments which ar l s by hinged doors, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my n 1 ha e ereto aff xed-my signatu e in presence of two witnesses c LU HOUSTON.
