Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented J an. 14, 1919.
Application filed December 12, 1916. Serial No. 136,565.
To (125 whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. GRUBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, in the county of Pike and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Kitchen-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in kitchen cabinets and has for its primary object the provision of a kitchen cabinet having a simple and efficient arrangement of compartments for receiving and housing articles in common use in the kitchen,these compartments being arranged in a manner convenient for use and arranged to be quickly and easily folded into housed positions.
Another object of my invention is to provide a kitchen cabinet of the class described having a novel arrangement of compartments for containing various articles, the device being of the knock-down type whereby to afford a cheap and durable construction which may be easily packed for. shipent.-
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is provided with a novel frame struc- 'ture for supporting various compartments,
said frame structure being, together with the compartments, preferably formed of metal.
Other objects and advantages not hereinbefore set forth will appear from the following detailed description and the claim, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a kitchen cabinet embodying the improvements of my invention, some of the compartments thereof being shown open;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the device with the compartments in closed position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the opposite side of the device;
Fig. 4 is' an end elevational view of the cabinet;
Fig. 5 is a top plan, being removed; and v Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of a portion of the modified form of frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein similar characters of reference the top of the device designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, I provide a frame composed of vertical corner posts 10,
' v Atop said posts being mounted on casters, which may be of the ball-bearing or any other approved type. The corner posts are connected with top and bottom side bars 12 and 13 and top and bottom end bars 14 and 15. Angle union joints 16 and T-joints 17 serve to connect the corner posts 10 and side and end bars 12, 13, 14 and 15, respectively.
A base board 18 is mounted in the frame, said base board being carried above the bottom bars 15 and engaging the corner posts 10 as indicated at 19. End walls 20 and 21 are provided, the end wall 21 being provided with loops 22 for engagement with one of the corner posts 10, thereby forming a hinged door. The wall 20 may be fastened stationarily in any desired manner. A longitudinal central partition 23 extends from the end wall 20 to a point near the door .21, a transverse partition 24 having said longitudinal partition in abutting relation therewith. Short side walls 25 and 26 extend from the partition 24to the'corner posts 10.
board 28 is provided, said top board being secured to the top bars of the frame by means of metal straps 29 or the like. The upper-surface of the board 28 is covered with sheet metal as at 30, said board being provided with sliding sections 31 and 32 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. An extension board 33 is provided hingedly connected as at 34 to the board 28, said extension 33 being maintained in horizontal extended position by means of a bracket arm 35. The board 33 is provided with I an external sheeting similar to the board 28.
The partitions 24, ber the same being 37, said partition forming and 39, closed normally by desired a plurality of shelves may be placed in the chambers 38 and 39 forming a cupboard.
A housing 41 is provided, the same being formed with loops 42 to enga e an interme diate post 43, said housing 41 eing adapted to receive a gas or oil stove 44. A bin 45 provided with loops 46 to engage the posts 43 is also provided, said bin 45 forming preferably a receptacle for cooking utensils and the like. A fireless cooker housin 46 provided-with loops 47 to engage one o the end posts is provided, said housing being adapted to swing into or out of position for use One portion of the housing 46 is curved 25 and 26 form a chamdivided by a partition two chambers 38 the door 21. If
. as at 48 to avoid striking the bin when being moved into and out of the cabinet. A flour bin 50 is provided arranged above the fireless cooker 46, said bin 50 carrying a flour sifter 51 of any desired make and a sugar container 52, said flour sifter and sugar container being foldable against the outer partition 53 of said flour bin. The handle of the flour sifter may be removable to permit folding of the same within the bin 50. 1
A partition 55 is provided on the side of the partition 23 opposite to the bin hereinbefore described, a plurality of drawers 56 being mounted between said partition 55 and the partition 24 to receive silverware and the like. provided, the same beingof any approved type. The refrigerator 58 is provided with ahinged door 59. Each of the corner posts 10 may be provided with a cup 60 to receive a liquid for preventing insects from reaching the cabinet.
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a modified form of my invention wherein one of the corner posts has been shown and designated 61, the same being provided with enlargements 62 formed'with recesses 63 adapted to receive the free ends of side bars 64, this connection being similar to the standard bed post connection and facilitating repair or renewal of the parts of my invention.
In use the variou compartments of my improved cabinet may be moved to open position for use as desired, it being preferred in some instances that name plates be placed on each of the cabinets in order that articles may be readily reached. It will beapparent that the device of my invention may be placed in the middle of a kitchen or at An ice-box or refrigerator 58 is-v Letters Patent, is
menses any other convenient point and as desired the various sections swung into position for use. The sliding sections 31 and 32 are to be moved into position for use when desired, thesame being employed as kneading boards or the like. Further the construction, by reason of the plane top or cover 30 may be readily used as a table.
From the above description taken in con-. nection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of theinvention as claimed. c
Having thus fully described my invention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by A device of the character described ineluding a frame composed of side, end pieces and legs adjacent its corners, collars arranged on the lower portions of said legs, a base board engaged with said collars, a vertically disposed post secured at its opposite ends to certain of the sides of the -frame, a plurality of superposed receptacles pivoted to said post and receivable in the space between the frame and base board, a hinged closure for one end of the space between the frame and base, a plurality of other receptacles pivoted to one leg and receivable in the space between the frame and base board, and a top arranged over said frame.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature hereto.
CHARLES W. GRUBBS.
