UNHTE STAT ULICK BOURKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CABINET.
Application filed November 27, 1920. Serial No. 426,786.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ULICK BOURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cabinet especially for small apartments which can be made ornamental and attractive in appearance, and which combines in a compact, convenient, and sanitary manner within one casing practically the entire equipment necessary for a small kitchen.
My improved cabinet may be made to resemble in design the modern low type phonograph cabinet and it may be stained, painted, or veneered to match the furniture or the Woodwork of the apartment. When the cabinet is closed it constitutes a piece of furniture and may be used as a table; but it includes within its walls a stove, an ice chest,
compartments for kettles, dishes, table silver, and other miscellaneous wares, racks to contain jars, cans, bottles and the. like to hold coffee, sugar, spices, etc., and many other articles of kitchen equipment and it may be readily opened up for kitchen uses. The cabinet may be made of wood, sheet metal or other suitable materials.
In the accompanying drawings showing a selected embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the cabinet closed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts opened and extended.
Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views showing the cover in open and closed positions.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the top.
Figs. 6,7 and 8 are fragmentary detail views illustrating the fastening devices for the cover.
Referring to the drawings, the cabinet designated generally 1 comprises a base 2 provided with doors 3, a top 4 and a hinged cover 5. The doors form a complete closure for the front of the base. A stove 6 of any suitable type using gas, oil or electricity is arranged on the top 4 and the cover is provided with a. compartment 7 to receive the stove when the cover is closed. Another compartment 8 in the cover is provided with racks for holding cans, jars or other containers for tea, coffee, spices and the like.
These racks comprise bases 9 having risers 10 at their outer edges and rails 11, the rails being set in the compartment a little beyond the risers. When the cover is open the cans, etc., will be held in upright position on the bases by the rails; but when the coveris moved to closed position the cans, etc. will shift on the bases to a tilted position against the risers whereby they will be more se curely held in place.
The base of the cabinet may be divided into any number of compartments as conditions may require, but I have found it advantageous to provide a large upper compartment 12 for dishes, table linen and miscellaneous articles. This compartment is formed by a horizontal partition 13 which extends entirely across the base. A small casing 14 is preferably located at one end of the compartment 12 to receive a drawer 15 for table silver and other small articles.
The portion of the cabinet below the partition 13 is divided by a vertical partition 16 into a refrigerator 17 and a storage compartment 18 for pots, kettles and pans. The refrigerator 17 includes an ice chest 19, a drawer 20 to catch the drip from the ice chest, and a food compartment 23. The wall 21 between the ice chest and the food compartment is preferably provided with one or more openings 22 at or near its top for communication between the ice chest and the food compartment 23. The walls of the refrigerator are preferably made double and packed with an insulating filling, and a door 24 is preferably provided to form a closure for the refrigerator.
The compartment 12 forms an air chamber between the top 4 and the top of the ice chest to prevent heat from the stove being conducted to the ice chest. Horizontal slots 25 are formed in the side walls of the cabinet preferably immediately below the top 4 to receive shelves 26 slidable therethrough. The outer edges 27 of these shelves form closures for the slots when the cabinet is not being used.
A curved arm 28 fastened to the cover is arranged to operate through a slot 29 in the back of the cabinet and engage a stop block 30 secured to the under side of the top 4 between the shelves 26. This construction provides for holding the cover in upright positionand avoids the provision of holes or slots in the top 4.
I have found it advantageous to support the cabinet on legs 128 of suitable design to add to its appearance. and likewise facilitate cleaning of the floor about the cabinet.
The manner .of using the cabinet is so obvious that any further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
I prefer to provide a latch device 31 beneath the top l to engage the arm 28 for maintaining the cover in open position. This latch device may be spring pressed, as shown in Fig. 7, to automatically engage the notched end 28 of the arm 28 when the cover stop for the arm and is to be so understool in construing the claims.
I am aware that changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be readily made without departing from the spirit .of the invention and I reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A cabinet comprising a base having a plane and unobstructed top, a stove arranged on said top adjacent one end thereof, a cover hinged to the base and having on its under side a compartment to receive the stove when the cover is closed and another compartment for receptacles, and means in the last mentionel compartment for holding the receptacles in place when the cover is closed and when it is open.
2. A cabinetcomprising a base, a cover hinged to the base, said cover having a compartment for receptacles on its under side, and a rack in said compartment comprising a base, a transverse rail across the compartment to engage the rece tacles adjacent the upper ends thereof, an a riser at the outer edge of the base spaced a distance from the rail and from the lower ends of the receptacles to permit the receptacles to tilt in the compartment when the cover is closed.
3. A cabinet comprising a base having a top, a cover hinged to the top, said base having a slot in its back wall, a stop block on the under side of the top, and an arm on the top adapted to operate through said slot and engage said block for limiting the opening movement of the cover and holding it in open position.
4. A cabinet comprising a base having a top, a cover hinged to the top, said base having horizontal slots in its ends adjacent the top and a vertical slot in its back, shelves slidably arranged in said end slots. a stop block located on the under side of the top between the shelvesto limit the inward movement of the shelves, and an arm on the cover adapted to operate through said back slot and engage said stop block.
5. A cabinet comprising a base having a top and a hinged cover, a stove on the top, the cover having a compartment to receive the stove when the cover is closed and another oompartment for receptacles, means in said other compartment for holding the receptacles when the cover is in open and in closed position, a large compartment beneath the top, a casing at one end of said compartment, a drawer in said casing, an upright partition below said large compartment, a compartment at one side of said up right partition, and a refrigerator at the other side of said upright partition comprising an ice chest and a food compartment.
6. A cabinet comprising a base having a top, a coverhinged to the top, said base havin a slot in its back wall, an arm on the top adapted to operate through said slot, and a combined stop and latch device to engage the end of the arm when the cover is in open position.
7. A cabinet comprising a base having a top, a cover'hinged to the top, said base having a slot in its back wall, a spring pressed latch device on the under side of the top, an arm on the top adapted to operate said slot and engage said latch device, and a pull wire connected to the latch device and projecting through the front of the base for releasing the latch device from the arm.
