Description

Dec. 15, 1931. F. M. vENzlE CLIP FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Filed Dec. 20, 1929 Patented Dec. 15, 1931 PATENT A OFFICE FREDERICK M.1VENZIE, vOF .PHILADELPHIA, :PENNSYLVAN'IA cLIrroR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION Application led December 20, 1929. Serial No. 415,526.
rIhis invention, generally stated, relates to a building structure and has more especial relation to a novel form of clip for supporting plaster boards as used in ceiling, partition, and wall constructions, an example of which may be found in my co-pending application 'for Letters Patent Serial No. 326,453, filed December 17, 1928. n
The leading object of the present invention l may be said to reside in the provision of a novel form of a clip whereby unskilled labor may more rapidly and eiiiciently erect ceiling partition and wall plaster boards, thereby to reduce building co-sts. l
A further object of the present invention 1s to provide a structure of the character stated which not only is entirely constructed of fire proofing material but is sound proof, very strong, and very cheap to erect.
A still further' object of the present invention is to provide a form of metallic clip for attachment to beams which may be I- beams, T-beams, channel irons and the like,
said clip being provided with rounded corners to prevent fracture of the plaster boards in assembly of the ceiling, wall, or partition, and also to facilitate rapid assembly.
A still iurth er object of the present invention is to provide a novel form of clip of the character stated which may be fitted to beams which may be arranged horizontally or vertically and may be -beams, T-beams, channel irons and the like for the support of plaster boards.
Other and further objects of the present invention reside in the provision of the general arrangement, combination, and connection of novel clip parts for attaining the results sought by the foregoing objects.
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which Fig. 1 is an inverted plan View illustrating a ceiling structure embodying the invention showing the application of my novel clip thereto.
Fig. 2 is a View in section taken on line 2`2 0f Fig. l. 1
Fig. 3 isa View in section taken on the line 8-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the clip detached. gig. v5 is a side View of the clip detached, an
' Fig. 6 is an end view of the clip detached.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form-thereofwhich is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found. in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not..
limitedto the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and'described. i
j Referring now to the drawings inV detail, and with especial relation to Figs. 1, 2, and 3,.` the reference numeral 1() designates a beam Vas used in floor and ceiling construction. In
the drawings the beam is shown as being an vplaster boards 13 which-are of conventional form and usually covered with felt paper,
which readily fractures.' In order to support the plaster boards 13 with respect to the beams I make 'use of thenovel 'form of clip,.4
4a description of` which will now be viven,
reference being particularly had lto Figs. 4, 5, and 6. rI he clip is stamped from a single piece of metaland comprises a substantially flat top plate, a pair of opposed bottom members and a side plate connecting the top and bottom members. i The top plate is provided with opposedjfiatportions 14 bent outwardly at A16 froma central depressed portionl.
rDepending from the central depressed-portion 15 is a wall 17 the terminals of which are curved at 18, best seen in Fig. 5. The member 17 is disposed at right angles to the part l5, see Fig. 6, and is provided with horizontal tongues 19 which parallel the part 15, see Fig. 6, and have their ends curved at 20. Paralleling tongues 19 are other tongues 21, curved at 22 at their ends. In use the parts 14 and17 including the tongues 19 are caused to be fitted to a beam, for instance, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2, the curved parts 23 and 18 serving to provide for an easy fitting together of parts. With the clips so supported,
unskilled labor may readilyiit to the clipsl y plaster boards 13, as seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In the connection it is to be noted that the curved parts 20 and 22 of the tongues 19 and 21 serve to permit of the ready insertion of the plaster boards 13 so that fracture of the paper covering does not readily result. lVith the plaster boards properly assembled, a coating of plaster 24 is applied..
I am aware that theinvention may be einbodied in other specific forms Without depart ing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the sco eof the invention.
hat I claim is:
1. A metal clip of the character stated comprising an integral structure having a substantially flat depressed top provided With beam flange engaging upturned ends, said top having depending therefrom an elongated side piece disposed at right angles to said top and of a length equal thereto, and oppositely disposed tongues extended from said side piece at right angles thereto, each tongue being ofv a length equal to the Width of said top. v
- 2. A metal clip of the character stated comprising an integral structure having a Y substantially iiatdepressed top provided With beam flange engaging upturned ends, said top having depending therefrom an elongated flat side piece disposed at right angles to said top and of a length equal thereto, and oppositely disposed tongues extended from said side piece at right angles thereto, each tongue being of a length equal to the Width of said top,
3. A meta-l clip of the Vcharacter stated comprising an inte-gral structure having a substantially flat depressed top provided Vwith beam flange engaging upturned ends,
said top having 4depending therefrom an elongated side piece disposed at right angles to said top andof a length equal thereto, and
oppositely disposed `tongues extended from -said side piece at right angles thereto, the
terminals of said .tongues each being curved,
each tongue vb einggof a length equal to the Widthof Isaid top.
4. A metal clip of the character stated comprising an integral structure having a substantially flat depressed top provided with beam flange engaging upturned ends, said top having depending therefrom an elongated side piece disposed at right angles to said top and of a length equal thereto, the upper edge of said side piece being curved at 18, and oppositely disposed tongues extended from said side piece at right angles thereto, each tongue being of a length equal to the Width of said top.
5. A metal clip of the character stated comprising an integral structure having a substantially flat depressed top provided With beam flange engaging upturned ends Which are curved at 23, said top having depending therefrom an elongated side piece disposed at right angles to said top and of a length equal thereto, and oppositely disposed tongues extended fiom said side piece at right angles thereto, each tongue being of a length equal to the Width of said top.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
FREDERICK M. VENZIE.
