Description

Dec. 15,1931. A H v* MARSH 1,836,380
SWINGING SIGN Filed March 2l, 1929 Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITEDv STATES VIPIAIRIRY V. MARSH, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIA sWINGrNG SIGN Application filed March 21, 1929. Serial No. 348,771.
The present invention relates to an advertising devi-ce formed of a singleblank and adapted to comprise two independent sections, one of `a'circular configuration, and the o? other a plane surface in associationtherewith and lockedin a predetermined position upon the circular section which latter section provides the baseV for the device.
The device may be employed for a counter 1o display or it may be employed as a. hanging display.
Included in the objects of the invention is a new and novel arrangement of sections o f a blank for the purpose of forming a com- 16 bination' of circular and flat advertising'display matter; the provision of a novel combination ofliat and circular display placards, and the combination ina display device of aportion 'depicting a can or other circular device 'and the remainder or second portion comprising a placard supported thereby or dependent therefrom. n
` These objects, and such other objects as mayhereinafter appear, are obtained by the novel combination, the unique arrangement, and the improved construction of the several sections or elements shown in the single 'embodiment of the invention-illustrated in the accompanying drawings', and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank emloyed for forming the device illustrated in n Figure 2 isa front elevation of the articulated blank; y
\ Figure 3 is a transverse section justl above the central portion of thedevice; and
Figure 4 is a'reduced elevation of the device used as a swinging sign.
Like reference characters are used to designate similar-partsvin the drawings and in the description which follows.v Vy j Reference should beV had first to Figure 1, but in conjunction therewith, Figures 2 and 3 may be conjointly read.
The circular portion of the device is formed by the main body thereof indicated by the reference 10, which portion extends from the extension 11 at the left hand side of the figure to the enclosed tongue 12 at the right i@ hand side thereof. The tongue 11 is adapted to be` inserted through the opening usedto form the enclosed tongue 12 whereby to provide an interlock in the circularpart of the device with the right hand portion 13 (Figure 1) diametrically disposed within the circular portion formed of sectionlO. Thus, a truly circular display device is formed and in which there is a centrally disposed spacer member having a Hat placard section extending therefrom. l
rThe lower edge of the blank is adapted to be cut along a straight line sothat the device will have a truly level bottom when seated upon a counter. F orproviding an interlock at the bottom, an extension hook 14 is provided upon the spacer 13and this is adapted to be inserted into the slit 15 extending from la point on the lower edge of the blank intermediate the tongue 12 andthe extension 11'. Y
The upper section of the blank (Figure l) depending from spacer 13 is divided into a part 16. Depending from section 16 is a second section 17, there being a score 18 therebetween to facilitate the folding ofthe sec-V tion 17 fiat upon the back of the member 16.
Member 16 extends to the right suliiciently that the member 17 exactly coincides and registers therewith, or in other words, members 16 and 17, from score 18, are of equal length and are divided equally and one from the other by said score- 18. p
Adl'acent the ytop edges of section 13, there are ears 19 `and 20 upon the member 16. The body of the ear19 is formed for the irregular slit employed byslitting the member 16 apart from the main body-10. Y v Upon said main body 10, and substantially half way" between tongue 11 and tongue 12 is an extension 21 in the upper edge of said body, 'and in which isV-shaped slit 22. Y Oppositethereto and on the member 17 is a complemental depression whichV serves no purpose in'interlocking the parts.- y
On the member 1I, however, is an `extension 23 having a V-shaped slot 24 therein.
A The extension 23 is adapted to be inserted into the sloty 22, the slot 24 facilitating the interlockbetween the members 10V and 17.
One die cut extends from the extreme end of member 17 to and about the ear 19 and this cut divides the part 10 from the part 17, and coincidentally forms the reversed extensions 21 and 23 and the slits or notches 22 and 24.
An added extension 25 with a notch 26 may be provided in body 10 to interlock With ear 19, but this is optional.
When assembly is desired, as has been previously indicated, the tongue 11 is adapted to be inserted through the slot whereby there is formed the flap 12, the part 13 then extending diametrically across the circular section thus formed, With the ear 14 interlocking into slit 15.
Thereupon the member 17 is folded back- Wardly upon the member 16, the ear 20 being adapted to be inserted inthe notch 22, 1n extension 21, and the ear 19 being adapted to be inserted into the slit 26 in the extension 25. The ear 20 is also adapted to be inserted into slots 2&1 in the extensions.
In this manner,a complete and rigid assembly ofthe device is obtained. The circular member is securely locked both at its bottom and atits top.
Likewise, the laminated flat display placard at the top isv secured with its two laminations thereof in close proximity and free from the possibility of accidental separation.
'Vhcn the device is used as a hanging sign, a string 27 is inserted at the upper edge and near the center of member 1.3, thus providing for balanced hanging of said placard, With the circular portion uppermost as. shown in Figure 4, the panels 13 and 17 being belou7 the circular section.
