DISPLAY DEVICE.
Application filed October 27, 1927. Serial No. 229,098.
This invention relates to display devices, an object of the invention being to provide a display device having a backing which has fixed relation to a front member, which lies flat against the front member when collapsed and which can be quickly moved and secured in operative position so. as to hold the device upright.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which provides space or mounting for an electric light to illuminate a picture, sign, or other ornament or data contained on the front member.
My improved device maybe made of cardboard although of course I do notwish to be limited to the materials employed, and
the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be more fullyhereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device looking at the back thereof;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank forming the supporting backing of the display device;
Figure 4c is a view similar to Figure 2 illustrating a modification;
Figure 5 is a View in transverse section showing the backing collapsed against the panel or card.
My improved display device consists of a front member 1 and a supporting member 2 located at the back of the front member 1.
The front member 1 may be made of any suitable material and may contain a picture such as illustrated or any other advertising or display data.
The display data or picture is, preferably, transparent or translucent, so that when i1- luminated from the rear it will be clearly displayed, and may also have different colors in accordance with the desire of the trade. In other words, I do not limit myself to any particular shape, form or decora tion of the front member as this may consist merely of a panel or card containing the data.
My invention has more to do with the backing 2 which supports the panel or cord 7 is folded on the score line 1 in upright position and which folds flat against the panel or card so as. to occupy but small space in shipping and storing.-
The blank is provided with a pair of parallel score lines 3 and 4 adjacent its side edges, and tongues 5 projectvupwardly from the upper edge of the blank between the pair of score lines 3 and 4:. A transverse or horizontal score line Sextends across the blank in line with the-lower ends of the tongues 5 and divides the main portion of the blank from a top member 7 which is of general oblong shape and which at both ends is formed with tabs 8 and grooves. or recesses 9 between the tabs and the ends of the top member 7. V
The blank may be provided with openings 10 for ventilation, and a recess 11 is formed in the bottom of the blank which may also function to admit air for ventilating purposes.
' The blank is provided adjacent its upper end at its intermediate portion with an opening 13, this opening having its major portion below the score line 6 and its minor portion constituting a tapering recess 14 in the top member 7.
In constructing the device, the blank is folded on the score lines 3 and 4, and the extremities of the blank, indicated by the reference numerals 15, are secured to the back of the panel or card 1 by adhesive or any other suitable means. The top member 6 and when said top member is forced down over the tongues 5 the latter will be received in the grooves or recesses 9 and hold the device against collapse, as clearly indicated in Figure 2 of the drawings.
The opening 13 is large enough to permit an electric lamp 16 to be inserted within the confines of the backing 2, and the wires 17 connected to the lamp 16 may be forced into the recess 14 so as to support the lamp as indicated.
When the top member is swung out of engagement with the tongues 5, 5, the backing may be collapsed flat against the card or panel 1, as clearly shown in Figure 5, so that the device will occupy but little space when not in use. When in use the backing acts as a support to hold the panel or card in upright position,and the parts are rigidly held in interlocking position between the 7 top member 7 and the tongues 5.
In Figure & I illustrate a modification which is in all structural respects the same as the preferred form indicated with the exception that an electric lamp 1? is shown supported by a socket 18 within the collapsible backing 2 with the wires 19 extending through the recess 11, which is merely another form of maintaining a lamp within the backing to illuminate the device.
While I have illustrated what I believe to be a preferred form of my invention, it is obvious various changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, including a front member, a supporting back member secured thereto, and a top member movable on the back member and functioning to lock the back member in holding position, said back member having an opening therein through which an electric lamp may be projected and said top member having a recess therein in which the wires to the lamp may be wedged to support the lamp.
2. In combination with a front member, of a backin member secured at its ends to the back of the front member and folded intermediate its ends, forming a box-like support for the front member, a top member movably connected to the intermediate portion of the back member and having notches therein, and tongues on the end portions of the back member receiving said notches and holding the back member in operative position, said back member having an opening therein through which an electric lamp may be projected and said top member having a recess therein in which the wires to the lamp may be wedged to support the lamp.
3. In combination with a front member, a back member composed of a blank having two parallel fold lines adjacent its side edges, and a transverse fold line adjacent its upper portion dividing the main portion of the blank from the movable top member, the side extremities of the said blank secured to the back of the front member, upwardly pro-' jecting tongues on the blank between the fold lines, tabs extending from the end of the top member, and the notches formed between the topmember and the tabs to receive the tongues therein and hold the back member in box-like supporting formation.
Signed at New York in the county of New York and State of New York this 26th day of October, A. D. 1927.
LOUIS MOSES.
