Description
C. A. WHEELER.
MACHINERY FOR cnmrme THE UPPERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
No.,18z,978. Patented Oct. 3, 1876.
UNITED STATEs PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES A. WHEELER, 0F BURLINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR CRIMPING THE UPPERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,978, dated October 3, 1876; application filed February 16, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. WHEELER, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a crimpingmachine for crimping and pasting boots, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
A represents a jaw, made of cast metal substantially in the form shown, for crimping the vamp of the boot therein. This jaw is made in V-shape, with the inner sides convex, open at the heel or wider end, and the toe or narrow end curved from the bottom upward and forward. At the heel on each side of the jaw Ais a hook-shaped projection, B. The jaw thus constructed is secured in a notch made in the edge of a bench or table, 0, in such a manner that the upper edges of the jaw will be perfectly flush or level with the upper surface of the table. D represents the lug or male part of the crimper, which is simply a shell of the same form or outline as the interior of the jaw A, and is intended to fit thereon. E is a short shaft, placed in the hooks B B, and having a cam, G, with handle H secured thereon for securing the lug D in the jaw A. I represents the front of the boot, which is laid on the table 0 in the position shown, and the lower edge of the front is pasted to the vamp J before it is erimped. The vamp is then erimped in the jaw A by the lug D, and the lug forced in and held in place by turning the cam G by means of its handle H.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the jaw A and the lug D, constructed and used as described, with the cam-lever G H, for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. WHEELER.
