Description
G. FRANCIS. Shoes.
' No 196,213. PatentedOct. 16,1877.
ATTORNEYS N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
VIP i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE FRANCIS, OF ALBANY, WISOON SIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,213, dated October 16, 1877; application filed April 17, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FRANCIS, of Albany, in the county of Green and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked. thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side view of a shoe containing the same, of which Fig. 3 is a rear-end view.
The object of this invention is to improve gaiter-boots by constructing the entire upper portion thereof of four parts, the proper shape of the leg portion being obtained by the insertion of a gusset into the upper edge of the back part of this leg portion, for the purpose of avoiding the necessity of blocking, as will be understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, A, B, and G designate the three pieces of leather forming the upper portion of my improved gaiterboot.
The front portion or vamp A is made of one piece of leather, united, by a seam, a, to the heel-piece or quarter B, which seam extends from the arch of the foot to the instep thereof, as shown in Fig. 3.
The leg portion 0 is cut as shown by Fig. 1, and united to the heel-piece or quarter B by means of a scam, 1), extending from the upper portion of the heel to the instep, and curving, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The-heel portion B is made of two pieces, united by a vertical seam at the back, and cut so as to conform to the roundness of the natural heel at the back part.
The upper or leg portion 0 is cut, as represented in Fig. 1, with a triangular notch, c, which I fill with a rectangularpiece,D, stitched in so as to spread the leg portion, and give the proper curvature to the back thereof without the necessity of crimping on a block.
By the insertion of the spreading-gusset D into the leg portion 0, I not only avoid the necessity of blocking, but I also prevent this portion from breaking or cracking by use.
I am aware that a shoe or bootee has heretofore been constructed in which the quarter is formed of a single piece of material, provided with a gore in the back, and. I, therefore, lay no claim to such invention, per 80.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved shoe herein described, con sisting of the vamp A, quarters B B, and leg portion 0, provided with the gusset D, all united together in the manner as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. Y
GEORGE FRANCIS. Witnesses:
JOHN HAHN, JOSEPH THOMPSON.
