I G. L. HIGGINS.
FOOTWEAR.
No. 549,360. Patented Nov. 5, 1895.
ANDREW B GRAHAM,PHDTO-UWQWASHINFI'UKDYC.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES LEANDER HIGGINS, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
FOOTWEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 549,360, dated November 5, 1895.
Application filedMarch 27, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEANDER HIGGINS, of the city of Montreal, in the district of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Footwear; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates more particularly to footwear or coverings known to the trade as cardigan overshoes, and has for its object to produce an article allowing of the foot being inserted and withdrawn with greater ease, and being much more easily and cheaply manufactured.
This invention is also applicable in the manufacture of overshoes having a rubber foot portion and a textile upper, and also in the manufacture of all kinds of footwear that have textile uppers or leg portions attached to rubber foot portions and that require that such point of attachment be of such a nature as to allow it to be stitched.
I will illustrate and describe my invention, however, as applied in the manufacture of cardigan overshoes.
For full comprehension of the invention reference must be had to the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like symbols indicate corresponding parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete article. Fig. 2 is ,an enlarged side View, partly broken away, of the upper or leg portion secured to the lining of a rubber foot portion; Fig. 3, a transverse vertical sectional view of same, taken on line 3 3, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4., a similar view to Fig. 3, but showing the article completed.
The rubber foot portion a in this case is of the usual form and construction, except that a front upwardlyrextended tongue portion a is provided, and the rear or heel counter portion is also preferably heightened or extended, as at a thus presenting a substantially V- shaped opening.
The knitted leg portion 1) has its lower edge out to correspond with the V-shaped opening of the foot portion and is therefore somewhat Serial No. 543,436. (to model.)
pointed, and such leg portion is connected to the upper edge of the lining c of the foot portion by stitching d, preferably of zigzag form, which overlaps the edge of the leg portion, and a line of stitching (1 running parallel with the edge of the lining.
The line of stitching d is first made with the lining in its proper position outside, after which'the parts are turned inside out and the zigzag stitching done, the first line acting as a guide to the second line of stitching, so that the latter will always be passed through the lining.
After the leg portion and lining have been connected, as described, the outer rubber covering and sole of the foot portion are secured to the lining in the usual manner and the article finished.
What I claim is as follows:
1. In the manufacture of rubber foot wear composed of a rubber foot portion and an up per or leg portionfirst stitching the lining of such rubber foot portion to the leg portion by a single line of stitching parallel to the edge of such lining, with such lining in its proper position, outside, after which such leg portion and lining are turned inside out and then stitched by a second line of stitching overlapping the edge of the leg portion, the first line of stitching acting as a guide for the second line of stitching for the purpose set forth.
2. In the manufacture of rubber foot wear composed of a rubber foot portion and an upper or leg portion-first stitching the lining of such rubber foot portion to the leg portion by a single line of stitching parallel to the edge of such lining, with such lining in its proper position, outside, after which such leg portion and lining are turned inside out and then stitched by a second line of stitching of zig-zag form, overlapping the edge of the leg portion, the first line of stitching acting as a guide for the second line of stitching, for the purpose set forth.
