Description
M. N. DREW MATCH BOX Oct. 27, 1931.
Filed March 18, 1929 Zlwuantoc Mite/1e NDrew atfoz mu Patented Oct. 27, 1931 UNITED: STATES MITCHELL N. DREW, onacmcy, FLORIDA} MATCH BOX My invention relates to matchboxes, and it is an object of the invention to provide a box by means of which a match may be struck when it is withdrawn therefrom; all as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
,Referring to the accompan ing drawings, which are made a part hereo and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective illustrating one application of my invention,
Figure 2, a similar, view showing the box partly open, i
Figure 3, a longitudinal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Figure 4, a part sectional part side elevational view illustrating the manner in which a match is ignited as it is withdrawn from the box.
In the drawings, reference character 10 indicates an outer box section which is the open ended cover or casing for an inner box section or slidably mounted tray 11, for holdin g matches 12. The member 10 has the same general construction as the corresponding member of an ordinary match box, but is not provided with striking paper as is employed in the usual match box.
An elastic band 13 is secured by cement or in any other desired manner to the narrow sides of the box, so that it will extend longitudinally across the ends of the same, the elastic band permitting the tray or inner portion of the box to be moved endwise for exposing a match to be removed, but when released will return the box to its telescoped position, when the contents of the box are concealed from view and the box is closed.
On the inside of the tray 11 or slidable member of the box is fastened a block 14 which is of a length corresponding to the width of the box, and which is curved gently from its side which is in contact with the end of the box to its side which rests upon the bottom of the box. Upon the upper portion.
of this curved surface is secured or cemented a striking paper 15, and on the inner side of the end of the top of the box is cemented another strip of striking paper 16, which cooperates withthe strip 15 to cause the match 12 to be struck as it is pulled from the box, the rubber band serving to supply enough resistance to the withdrawal of the match to cause the striking action.
In the use'of the device the tray of the match box is filled with matches, and when it is desired to use a match the casing 10 is held in the hand and the tray is pushed outwardly against the action of the elastic 13, one match is partially withdrawn preparatory to light-' ing the same, when a pull will bring the head in contact with the striking paper on the inner surface of the inside top and at the same v time in contact with the striking paper on 05 the wooden block, the elastic affording suiticient resistance to cause the striking of the match. However, if desired, the tray may be 7 held in closed position by the fingers, and the match pulledout to strike it, the top of (7'6 the casing being sufiiciently flexible to permit the head to be withdrawn.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may, be'made inmy device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I, therefore, do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the appended claims. W
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A match box comprising an open-ended outer box section, a tray forming an inner box section, astriking paper mounted on a curved block between the contiguous edges of the ends of the tray and a flat striking paper mounted on the underside of the top I of the outer section, resilient means normally holding the box sections in closed position for forcing a match head against said'striking paper when the same is drawn between said sections,-substantially as set forth.
2. A match box comprising an outer section and an inner box section, an elastic band havingits ends secured to the sides of said outer section and'extending across one end of said section for checking the outward movement of the inner box section, a block secured between the sides of said inner section and having a striking paper mounted thereon, a flat striking paper mounted on the under side of the top being in close proximity to said striking paper when sections are m a substantially closed position, substantially as set forth.
In itness whereof, I have hereunto set my handat Quincy, Florida, this 15th day of March,'A. D. nineteen hundred and twentynine.
