BOX
Filed Feb. 8, 1945 Patented June 4, i946 BOX Irving Robins, Chicago, Ill., assignor of one-half to Leonard Robins, Chicago, lll.
Application February 8, 1945, Serial No. 576,791
1 Claim. 1
The invention relates to boxes and more particularly to handles for boxes to facilitate the carrying of boxes.
It is an object to provide a handle which may be readily applied and removed from a box so that the carrying of the box when necessary or the opening of the box may be readily accomplished.
It is a further object to provide a handle which at its ends is provided with a head adapted to be inserted through slots provided in the box free from distortion of the heads.
It is a still further object to provide a handle whose end heads may be inserted under an angle through slots in the box and which heads do not interfere with the content of the box and occupy a minimum space at the inner face of the slotted box wall.
With these and other important objects in view which will become apparent from a perusal of the invention, the latter comprises the means described in the specification, particularly pointed out in the claim forming a part thereof, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1-is a perspective view of a combined box and handle constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view.
Fig. 3 is a. section on the line 3-3 ot Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing the enlarged slot in the box and the handle under angle ready for insertion in the slot.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the handle.
Referring to the drawing, III generally designates the box which may be made of frangible or other material and is shown by way of example as having a rectangular cross section. The box has en'd walls II which have near the top an oblong slot I2, said slots being in horizontal alignment.
A similar slot I3 near the bottom of each end wall may be provided.
A handle I4 comprises an elongated band or strip and terminates at each end with an arrow head Il.
The slots I2 or I3 are preferably in the form of a trapeze or quadrilateral and the diagonal length of said slots slightly exceeds the Width of the arrow head I5 to thereby afford insertion of the arrow under an acute angle as shown in Fig. 4.
After insertion and the handle occupying normal position the arrow heads now onthe inner face of the end wall are prevented from working through the slots I2 since the width of the arrow,
head exceeds the Width ofthe slot.
'I'he slots I2 and I3 serve as vent openings for the box.
The arrow heads may be easily inserted as they do not interfere with the contents of the box and not having been distorted while being inserted they lie flat against the inner face of the end walls.
If preferred the handle may be applied through the slots I3.
While the drawing shows one embodiment of the invention numerous changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit o1' the invention.
I, therefore, include all changes and modications constituting departures within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
For use with a packed box, an oblong quadrilateral open slot in each of the end walls of the box, a handle comprising a body portion and a tapering head at each end of the body portion,Y
without distortion of the head, said head at its inner end projecting laterally beyond the body portion of the handle and having a width greater than the width of the slot, whereby the handle becomes anchored to the box when turned from said angular position to normal position for use.
