Description

Patented Oct. 6, 1931 PATENT oF c:
EMILE BOECKEL, OF PARIS, FRANCE CIGARETTE AND CIGAR HOLDER Application filed September 7, 1829, Serial No. 391,()17, and in France August 22, 1929.
i This invention has for object a new arrangement for extracting and ejecting auto- 'matically ont of Cigarette or cigar holders the end of the cigarette or cigar when the 'Bl-Litter has been Smoked.
It is in fact annoying and disagreeable, especially for a lady to have to extract the stub-end remaining in the holder hy hand or with some article at hand as for instance the point of a match or a pin.
The new arrangement perinitsof eXtracting and ejecting automatically the end oI" the cigarette which remains, by simple pressure onja small later-al knoh or pusher which by reason of its disposition and nature constitutes' moreever a supplementary ornainent for the holder. Further the new arrangement by reason of its Construction isapplicable to all shapes and to all dimensione of cigarette or cigar holder and not exclusively to a' particular type. A
r The arrangement consists essentially as follows: i
Of an extracting pisten housed in the holder disposed axially as well as its tuhular guiding sten for the passage for the smoke and provided with a spring which constantly tends to push it towards the rear and retaining pin to hold it in the position Wherein the spi-ing is loaded.
Of a retaining ring for the pin for the piston, enclosed in a cap through which the pin for the pisten passes and the guide tube for the latter, said retaining ring being eccen- 35 trically disposed so as to catch and retain the pin for the pisten but capable of receiving a translatory movement in its plane by the action of a small spring plunger extruding to the outside surface of the holder in such a inanner as to come concentricall with the pisten and its pin to free the letter and allow the piston to slide forwardly under the action of its spring.
The accompanying drawings show by way of example at: Figure l a cigarette holder fitted with the device seen in longitudinal section the pisten occupying its most rearward position so that the cigarette may he fitted and Smoked; Figure 2 the same holder likewise seen in longitudnal section, the
plunger being pushed in and the piston freed so expelling the end of the Smoked cigarette; Figs. 3 and two cross sectional views taken at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the holder through the plunger, these figures corresponding respectively to the position occupied by the plunger and 'the retaining ring in Figs. 1 and 2 Fig. 5 the several mem bers constituting the device seen in perspective before' assembly.
To permit 'of the application of the said device, the cigarette or cigar holder 1, which may be of any dimension and of anysuitable external section: round, heXagonal, square and so on and one or several parte but not formed with a gradually decreasing section of bore but with a forward housing 2 which is cylindrical or slightly trunconic and a smoke Conduit 3 of lesser dianieter, the housing 2 so 'comprising an end wall t and a hemispherical cup 5. y
At the end of the housing '2 is disposed a small capsule 6 and its cover 7, both being bored through their centres and enclosing the engaging ring 8 the central bore of which is chanifered on one side 8' to faclitate the introduction of the retaining pin of the extracting piston and provided with a small screw thread on its periphery A small plunger 9 the head of which protrudes on the side of the holder through an orifice provided for this purpose, is screwed in the lateral screw thread of the engaging ring 8. A small spring 10 is fitted on the stern ofthis plunger and hea'rs at one end against the ahutnent 9' provided on the plunger and at the other end against the cap 6 through wvhich slides the stern of the plunger. 11 encloses the spring 10 and at the same timeserves to prevent the entry of air through the orifice left for the passage oi' the plunger.
A pisten 12 bored at its centre slides in the housing 2 and is integralized with a guiding tube 13 fitted in the passage 3 so as to slide therein and give a Conduit for the smoke. This piston is provided with a retaning pin 14 which, when the pisten is pushed back for the introduction of the eigarette in the housing 2, penetrates into an orifice in the Finally a small pressed on casing y cover 7 of the engaging ring 8 and of the botton of the cap 6 and is then retained by the ring S which the spring 10 ot' the plunger forces to constantly take up an eccentric position as shown in Figs. l and 3 when the plunger is not pushed upon.
A helical spring 15 con'pressed between the cover 7 and the pisten 12 is integralized therewith by the introduction of its extremities in grooves 7' and 12' of a recess 7" and 12" tormed on said cover and pisten respectively.
Alternatively a cylindrical pin not shown, can be fitted inside the housing 2 and serve as cylinder for pisten 1 The arrangement so eonstructed functions in the following manner.
Then a cigaretteis pushed into the housing 2, spring 15 which is suiiciently strong to expulse the finished ends ot' a cigarette is not strong enough to prevent the insertion of a fresh eigaretteor to damage it. The pisten 12 theretore :gives awayand is pushed baci(- wards to the end ot the housing 2. The pin 14 enters a cap 6, earries the engaging ring 8 slightly towards the centre by reason ot the chamfer 8' seas toenter it then permits this ring to return to its original eccentric posi tion so that thereafter it can oppose the forward movement ot the pisten, keep the spring 15 loaded and prevent the lighted cigarette from being unmtentionally ejected.
The drawing of the cigarette ensured and the :inhalation ot the smoke takes place through the tube 13. Vhen the 'eigarette is almost finished and one is about to insert a new one or put aside the holder it is only necessary to lightly press with the finger on the small lateralplunger 9 which pushes back the ring 8 and eauses it to slide in the cap G in order to take up a position such that it is coneentnie with the tube of the pisten. The pin lsof slightly less diameter to the orifice of the retaining ring being then no longer engaged and since a passage is opposite it, it no longeropposes the action of the spring 15 which detends, pushes back the pisten 12 and expulses the end of the cigarette from the holder.
The eigarette or 'cigar holder eonstructed with=such an ar-angement can not only have any shape or dimension as already stated but `can be made of all substances usually employed for such holders while the parts of the ejectingdevice susceptible of being seen can be made of ordinary or precious metals naturally with the exception of 'the springs.
The head or 'knob of the plunger which projects externally of the holder and which 'is -one of the main eharacteristics of 'the deviee can 'be fitted with a preeious stone or an imitation litted 'in a ring surrounding the holder or in an engraved crown ornamented with brilliants and so on formed by the edge ofethe easing surrounding-the plunger ll.
I claim:
l. In a. holder for eigars and cigarettes means for expelling stub ends comprising a pisten adapted to slide in a recess in the holder a slidable smoke tube carryin said piston a spring disposed exteriorly of said smoke tube adapted for propelling said piston, a housing in said holder, a ring mounted for lateral movement in said housing, a stud carried by said ring said stud normally projecting laterally to the exterior of the holder, means tor retaining said ring eccentrically of the holder, and means upon the smoke tube for engaging said eccentrically disposed ring to retain the piston in its retracted position said ring being moved into coneentrie position to release said pisten upon pressing said stud.
2. In a holder for cigars and cigarettes, means for expelling stub ends eonprising a piston for ejecting the stub ends housed in a. reeess in the holder, an axial guide tube carrying said pisten the smoke passing through said tube, a spring for propelling said pisten, a member for retaining said piston retracted, said member being carried by said guide tube, a. easing located in the bore ot the holden said casing being provided with a hoie through which said guide tube passes a ring mounted in said casing, said ring being capable of lateral displacement, a peripheral stud carried by said ring said stud 1n'ojecting laterally through the exterior of the holder and mans for holdin g said ring eccentrically of the holder, said ring being eecentrically disposed when the stud is not pressed to engage the retaining member said ring becoming concentrcally disposed to release the pisten on pressure being applied to saidstud.
