IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,489, dated September 19, 1876; application filed August 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SMOOT, Sr., of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and
in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my plow, partly in section. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of parts thereof.
A represents the plow-beam, to which the handles B B are connected. 0 is the plowstandard; D, the mold-board, and E the plow point or share.
To the land-side of the plow, at the rear, is pivoted a wing, G, which is held to one of the handles B by means of a bolt, b, passing through a slot, at, in the wing into the handle. This wing may thus be adjusted according to the wear it is subjected to. As the heel of the plow gets worn it can be lowered, so as to have a perfect land-side all the time. The wing is to be lowered from time to time, as required, until it is so much worn that it cannot be used any more, when a new wing can easily be put in its place.
The standard 0 is held to the beam A by a clip, G, passing around the beam, and the ends or arms of the clips passing through the plow-standard, and nuts screwed on the ends for clamping the same. The upper end or arm of the clip G lies in a grooved casting, d, on top of the beam, as shown.
On the side of the plow-standard is a rib or flange, 6, which enters a groove in the side of the beam A, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the standard is held rigidly and firmly to the beam when the clip is tightened.
I represents the draft-rod, the rear end of which is bent at right angles, and screwed upward into the beam from the under side, about half the distance through the beam. Ordinarily these draft-rods are passed entire- 1y through the beam, which weakens the beam at that point. By simply screwing this end of the draft-rod half-way through the beam, as shown, the beam does not become seriously weakened.
The front end of the draft-rod I passes through a hole, f, in the lower end of a plate or casting, J, which is slotted vertically, as seen in Fig. 2. This plate or casting J is formed with horizontal corrugations h h on its front side, and on its rear side it has two vertical \/-shaped ribs or flanges, i i. This plate is adjusted both vertically and laterally to place the draft'rod in any desired position by the following means: To the front end of the beam A is fastened a plate or casting, L, which extends a suitable distance on both sides of the beam, and is slotted longitudinaliy. This plate has an arm, K, projecting rearward from its lower edge, and this arm is fastened to the under side of the beam. The front side of the plate or casting L is formed with vertical corrugations m m, as shown in Fig. 2.
A headed bolt, n, is passed from the rear through the slots in the plates or castings L and J, the ribs 6 on the latter entering the corrugations on the former. A washer, 10, is then placed on the end of the bolt n, and a nut, s, screwed upon the same for fastening the parts together, the washer being provided with ribs to to enter the corrugations h on the plate J. By these means the parts'are held firmly together, and can be adjusted so as to bring the draft-rod in any desired position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The plow-standard 0, provided with rib or flange e, in combination with the grooved beam A, grooved casting d on top of the beam, and clip Gr, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the plow-beam A, slotted plate L, having corrugations m, slotted plate J, having ribs t and corrugations h, the bolt n, washer p, with ribs 00 and nut s, all as and for the purposes herein set forth.
