Description
T. M. MOORE.
Plow.
No. 204,358. Patented May 28,1878.
RPETERS. FrmTU-LITHdGRAPl-IER. WASHINGTON D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
THOMAS M. MooEE, OF TYLER, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND RICHARD BLAIR, 0E SMITH COUNTY, TEXAS.
IM PROVEM ENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,358, dated May 28, 1878; application filed April 1, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. MOORE, of Tyler, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a plan or longitudinal view of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the reverse side of the device represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view in perspective, and Fig. 4 represents the rear of the standard and its connections in a horizontal plane. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the standard B. Fig. 6 is a detached view, in perspective, of the standard, showing perforated plate or stud h. Fig. 7 represents the land-side F, provided with recess or slot g.
Oorrespondin g parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.
This invention appertains to certain improvements in plows, and is adapted to prevent the gathering of weeds or grass, and to be used with or without a land-side; the landside adapted to suit the length of plow; the standard constructed to permit of the attachment thereto of a sweep, and of greater convenience for the adjustment of the plow in position; the plow caused to run more evenly and steadily; the dispensing with an offset in bracing the plow against the standard; the standard adapted to be shifted horizontally; and, finally, the handles adjusted in position, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A marks the beam, and B the handles, which are bolted at their lower ends to said beam. 0 refers to a slotted stud orpostboltedto the beam A. Through the slot of said post passes a bolt or pin, at, extending from the handles, to permit of the vertical adjustment of said handles in adapting them to the convenience .of the operator or attendant.
B is a standard, to which the plow and land-side are attached, pivoted at its upper front end to the beam A. At its upper rear end is a headed bolt, 1), which extends up into a slotted plate or end", I), fastened to the ,beam A. The slot in the plate b is segmental in form, to permit of the shifting of the standard horizontally upon its pivot, to adjust the plow-point out of line with the draft, the effect of which will be to permit of plowing out of a line with the tongue or beam, and thus prevent the trampling of the plants by the horses. The front edge of the standard B is provided with a lateral flange, 0, having a recess, c, which receives a shoulder upon the rear side of the wing D of the plow, to assist, with the fastening-bolt, in holding the same in position. The wing D, with its point D, is so adjusted to the front of the standard as to stand flush with the land-side, and thus protect the latter at its front edge. Lower down upon the front surface of the standard B is another recess or slot, 6, to receive the "sweep or blade E, secured therein by the plow-point bolt, when the point is cast and fastened separately. Otherwise a separate bolt is necessary to fasten the sweep in posisition.
F refers to the land-side, which is provided with screw-bolts, passing through slots ff in the lower end of the standard B, to permit of the land-side being adjusted to adapt it to the length of the plow. The front edge of the land-side F is provided with an elongated recess or slot, 9, to provide space for the sweep E in adjusting the said land-side to adapt it as aforesaid.
It is obvious that by this adjustment the land-side may be omitted when occasion may require.
The plow is curved from shoulder to point of land-side, then straightened to point on under side, the upper or front surface having a gradual curve its entire length, which, with the long share, lightness of standard, and the land-side serving as a guide, causes the plow to run more evenly and steadily.
The plow D D, unlike that of the ordinary construction, is braced in position against the standard without the use of an offset.
Upon the inside of the standard A is a perforated plate or stud, h, to admit of the attachment of an additional mold-board to turn subsoil and thoroughly pulverize it.
There are no grass-rods and projecting boltheads or like appendages to gather grass or weeds, which would clog and obstruct the free movement of the plow.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The standard B, provided with slots ff, in combination with the land-side F and its fastening-bolts, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The vertically adjustable land-side F, provided upon its front edge with an elongated recess or slot, g, in combination with the standard B and its sweep or blade E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The standard B, provided with recessed and slotted flange c and recess or slot e, wing D, and sweep or blade E, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
4. The standard B, provided with the slots f e and recessed or slotted flange c,'in combination with the land-side F, sweep E, and plow D D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The standard B, slotted plate b, with bolt b, beam A, perforated post 0, and pin or bolt a, substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOS. M. MOORE.
