The invention relates to closet seat hinges.

An object of the invention is to provide a.

-' simple but elfective'closet seat hinge inolu d-' 'ing a pair of hinge members which are securely and rigidly attached to opposite side edges of the seat member to prevent weaving of the parts and to permit expeditious further tightening in the event of shrinkage of the seat member. I

Another object of theinvention is to provide an adjustable friction between the parts bywhich the cover may be made to remain at any desired angle without falling, thus avoiding slamming of the cover and also permitting thecover to stand at an angle less than 90 from its horizontal position in cases where the flush tank extends over the closet bowl more than the usual distance. i i

A further object ofthe invention is to provide the hinge with s'elf contained stop means which will limit the rearward movement of the cover. V Y i A further object ofthe invention is to construct the hinge in a manner which will permitconvenient assembly of the parts and facilitate cleaning. i

In these drawings, the numeral 10 desig-' nates 'a closfet bowl having apertures at its rearlportions receiving therein a pair of spaced upstanding posts or standards 11 seou'redin place by nuts '12, the usual rubber washers 13 being provided. The upper ballshaped ends of the posts Or standards are provided with laterally opening bores having journaled therein the opposite ends of a hori-' zontal shaft or pin 14 which extends fixedly through the rear portion of a seat member 15.

In that form of the invention shown in Figs. lfto3, a cover 16 is arranged abovethe seat 15 and each has a narrowed rear portion presenting parallel side cheeks. A pair of angular hinge plates 17 have their lower portions disposed between the opposite side cheeks of the seat 15 and theadjacent posts 11, and are apertured to pivotally surround the shaft 14, there being washers 18 interposed between the hinge plates and the cheeks of the seat. The upper portions of the hinge plates bear against the side cheeks of the coverand are each providedwith a pair of spaced lugs 19, which enterand closely fit withinbores 20formed in the cover. Abore 21 is formed in each hinge plate betweenthe lugs 19 and registers with a horizontal bore 22 of the same diameter formed through the rear portions of the cover-between its opposite side cheeks. A

rod 23 of smaller diameter than the bore 22 extends longitudinally within the bore and has its opposite ends screwed into internally threadedbushings 24twhich fit closely within thebores 21 in the hinge plates and in the opposite ends ofthe registering box-e22 in the cover. The outer ends of the bushings 24 are provided with polygonal heads 25 which'engage the outer facesof the hinge plates for clamping the hinge plates into firm'engage- 'ment with the side cheeks ofthe cover,'thus avoiding loosening of the hinge plates and wabbling or weaving of the cover.

In that formof the invention shown in Figs; 4 and 5, angular hinge plates 17 similar to the hinge plates 17, are apertured to receive a pair of parallel rods 23 passing through bores 22' in the rear portion of a cover 16. Each rod is headedat one end and atits other end is adjustably screwed into an internally threaded bushing 24 which fits 'closelv within one of a pair of bores 21' in one'of the hinge plates, the bushingbeing pro-' vidediwith a slotted head 25'. By turning the bushings 24: the hinge plates areadjustably clamped into firm engagement with the side cheeks of the cover.

17 and 17 are each provided at their rear portions with lugs 26, which are adapted to engage sloping stop abutments or shoulders 27 on the "hinge posts 11 for limiting the rearward movement of the hinge plates and the attached cover, as seen in Fig. 5, the cover in its rearward position being approximately vertical. By this means the cover is limited in its rearward movement without requiring its engagement with the flush tank, thus avoiding. knocking of the cover against the tank and possible ma-rring of the finished surfaces of the parts.

lVhat I claim as new and desire to-secure by Letters Patent is:

1. The combination, with a closet seat and a cover thereabove, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to 'a closet bowl, a hinge pin extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of said closet seat, a pair of hinge plates having their lower portions pivoted on said pin and engageable with opposite side edges of the rear portion of said cover, and means passing through said cover for fixedly clamping said hingeplates to said cover.

2. The combination, with a closet seat and a cover thereabove, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to a closet bowl, a hinge pin extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of said closet sea-t, a pair of hinge plates having their lower portions pivoted on said pin and engaged with opposite side edges of the rear portion of said cover, there being a pair of spaced openings formed in each side edge of said cover, a pair of spaced lugs carried on each hinge plate and fitting within said, openings, and clamping means for each hinge plate disposed between said spaced lugs on said hinge plate and entering said cover for fixedly clamping said hinge plate thereto. p

8. The combination, with a closet seat and cover, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to the closet bowl, a rod extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of said closet seat, and a pair of hinge members fixed- 1y secured to said cover and having a pivotal mounting about said rod and said hinge members having a frictionalconnection with the seat for frictionally retarding the movement of said cover'to avoid slamming of said cover.

4. The combination, with a closet seat and cover, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to the closet bowl, a rod extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of said closet seat. a pair of hinge members for said cover having a pivotal mounting about said rod and having a frictional connection with theopposite side edges of the seat for frictionally retarding the movement of said cover to avoid slamming of said cover, and means for adjusting the frictionalconnection between said hinge members and said seat.

5. The combination, with a closet seat cover, of a pair of hinge plates fixedly se-' cured to the opposite side edges of the cover adjacent its rearportion, supporting means on which said hinge plates are pivotally mounted to permit swinging movement of the cover, means having a frictional engagement with the inner faces of said hinge plates adjacent the pivoted portions of said hinge plates to frictionally retard the movement of said cover, and means for shifting said hinge plates, to adjust the frictional retardation of the cover.

6. The combination, with a closet seat member having opposite side edges at its rear portion and a transverse bore extending between said opposite side edges, a pair of hinge plates abutting against said oposite side edges, means passing through said bore for fixedly clamping said hinge plates to said seat member, there being recesses formed in said side edges in spaced relation to said bore, projecting members carried by said hinge plates and fitting within said recesses for resisting rotation of said hinge plates on said clamping means, and means for pivotally supporting said hinge plates.

7. The combination, with a closet seat and a cover, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to a closet bowl, a hinge pin extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of the seat, a pair of separate hinge plates pivoted on said pin and engaged with the side edges of the cover, and adjustable means passing through the cover for fixedly clamping the hinge plates thereto.

8. The combination, with a closet seat and a cover, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to a closet bowl, a hinge pin extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of the seat, a pair of separate hinge plates pivoted on said pin and engaged with the side edges of the cover, there being an opening extending through the cover, and screw means extending within said opening and operatively connected with the hinge plates for fixedly clamping said hinge plates to the cover.

9. The combination, with a closet seat and a cover, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to a closet bowl, a hinge pin extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of the seat, a pair of separate hinge plates pivoted on said pin and engaged with the side edges of the cover, there being an opening extending through the cover and registering openings formed in the hinge plates, a threaded rod extending within said opening, and attaching means screwed onto opposite ends of said rod and having headed portions engaged with the outer faces of said hinge plates to fixedly clamp said hinge plates to the cover.

10. The combination, with a closet seat and a cover, of a pair of standards adapted to be secured to a closet bowl, a hinge pin extending between and mounted in said standards and passing through the rear portion of the seat, a pair of separate hinge plates pivoted on said pin and engaged with the side edges of the cover, there being an opening extending through the cover and registering openings formed in said hinge plates, a threaded rod extending within said opening, and internally threaded bushings screwed onto opposite ends of said rod to fit within said hinge plate openings and having headed portions engaging the outer faces of the hinge plates for fixedly clamping said hinge plates to the cover.

11. The combination, with a closet seat cover, of a pair of hinge members engageable with opposite side edges of said cover, supporting means on which sa1d hinge members are pivotally mounted, there being a pair of transverse openings extending through said cover betweenits opposite side edges and ar-
