1 Claim. (Cl. 4-236) This invention relates to water closet seats and more particularly to a multiple hinge construction for detachably connecting a toilet seat and cover to a closet bowl.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of the above nature wherein the toilet seat and cover are rotatable about trunnion pins carried by the supporting members which are to be attached to a closet bowl, detent means being provided to retain the trunnions in place in sockets provided in the seat, whereby the seat and cover may be assembled as a unit in the supporting members and will not become detached or lost during handling or shipment,
Another object is to provide a toilet seat hinge of the above nature in which the trunnions are integral with the supporting posts and are to be received in the sockets, the cover being attached to a pair of ears having depending lugs rotatably carried by said trunnions.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, ornamental in appearance and very efficient and durable in use. Y
With these and other objects in View there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing,
Fig. 1 represents a top view of a toilet seat and cover attached to a water closet bowl by one form of hinge embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the broken line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detailed elevation on an enlarged scale, partly in section, of one of the hinges.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts thronghout the several views, the numeral indicates a conventional toilet seat having a reduced extended back 11 provided with transversely extending aligned bores 12 within which may be tightly fitted a pair of sleeves 13 having end anges 13a. A cover 14, which may be of any convention design, is provided with a reduced extended back 15, to the underside of which there are suitably secured a pair of angular metallic ears 16 having down- Wardly extending lug portions 17.
The lugs 17 are spaced so as to lie adjacent each of the sleeves 13, and are provided with openings 18 of the same diameter as the bores within the sleeves 13. The seat 10 and the cover 14 are pivotally supported on a pair of spaced vertical mounting posts 19 having rearwardly oiset threaded lower ends 20 adapted to be secured to a toilet bowl 21 by nuts 21a. The posts 19 are provided with inwardly extending integral trunnion pins 22 which pass through the openings 18 in the lugs 17 and are rotatably received within the sleeves 13.
In order to retain the various elements in their assembled relation, detent means may be provided to keep the trunnions 22 positioned within the sleeves 13. One such detent means may include the provision of an annular groove 23 in each trunion 22 in longitudinal alignment with an inwardly disposed indent 24 formed in the sleeve 13.
While there has been disclosed in this specification, one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to this specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms, without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
In a water closet seat and cover combination, a seat having an extended back provided with a pair of inwardly directed transversely aligned bores, bearing sleeves located in said bores, a cover, a pair of downwardly directed lugs secured to the underside of said cover and having horizontal openings in alignment with the bores in said seat, a pair of hinge mountings having integral horizontal trunnion pins adapted to be received through the openings in said lugs and within said bearing sleeves, and means engageable between said sleeves and said trunnion pins to retain said assembly of elements in operative position prior to the attachment of said mountings to a water closet, said means comprising an annular groove in each of said trunnion pins and an indented portion on each of said sleeves projecting into said grooves.
