IMPROVEMENT IN CLASPS FOR BLANKET-STRAPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,460, dated September 19, 1876 application filed February 26, 1876.

Be it known that we, ELisHA A. MARK- HAM and JAMES M. ROE, both of Ayer, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Devices for Securing Straps to Horse- Blankets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan representing the outer portion of our improved device for securing a strap to a horseblanket. Fig. 2 is a plan representing the inner portion of our device applied to the under side of the blanket. Fig. 3 is a central section on the line w x of Fig. l.

Our invention relates to that class of fastenings where the end ot' the strap is clamped to the blanket, Src., between two plates or disks, one against the strap and the other against the opposite side of the blanket, and fastened with a screw. It consists in making the screw in one piece with the outside plate, so that it will not loosen, fall out, is easy to turn, and requires no screw-driver. It further consists in certain main details, hereinafter more specically described and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use our invention, We will pro-y ceed to describe the manner in which we have carried it out.

In the said drawings, A represents a portion of a horse-blanket, to which a strap, B, is secured at any desired point, by. means of two circular plates, a b. The outer plate a is provided at its center with a screw-pin, c, and a short stud,'d, both projecting from its inner side, and the upper end of the strap being caught over the screw' and stud and laying flush within a depression or recess, e, formed in the inner side of the said outer plate. The inner plate b is provided with a female screw, h, at its center, and is turned over the screw c projecting from the inside of the outer plate, and is provided at its periphery with a flange or raised edge, z', the interior of the plate b being cut away, as seen in Fig. 2, and serving as a nut for clamping the strap to the blanket at any desired point, the blanket being rst pierced for the entrance ot' the screw c, and the uut or inner plate b being turned by the application of the fingers thereto, so as to compress thelblanket between its raised edget and the inner concave surface of the outer plate, thus rigidly connecting the strap with the blanket, as desired. The end of a strap to which a buckle is attached may in a similar manner be secured to the blanket at a point opposite to that where the strap B (to fit into the buckle) is secured.

The greater portion of the outer plate a within its edge is cut away for a double purpose, viz., for lightness, and for exhibiting through its openings a material having a color in contrast with that ofthe plate-for instance, a piece of red morocco, for ornamental purposes but the entire surface of this plate may be closed, if desired. It' desired, the screw may project out from the inner surface of the inner plate b, and Yturn into a female screw formed in the center of the outer plate.

Itis evident that a number of modications in the construction of our improved device may be made. For instance, the plates may be ot' hexagonal or other form than circular, if desired, without departing from the spirit of our invention.

Our device is unique and durable, and may be readily adjusted into any position desired, so as to adapt a blanket, Ste., to tit any horse, and the said device may be removed from one blanket when worn out, and applied to a new one.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A clasp for blanket-straps, consisting of the plate a and. screw c, made in one piece, and

provided with a recess for the strap, in combination with the plate b, substantially as described.
