This invention relates to a detached dwelling or house mail box.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a mail box that can be incorporated in a building wall between studding and ad justed to the thickness of the wall and so that when mounted there is exposed a covered opening upon the exterior of the dwelling or house and a covered opening in the interior.
One feature of the invention consists in the construction of the same such that a box of this character is adapted to readily accommodate large sized magazines of the follow-' ing character, Saturday Evenin Post, Ladies Home Journal, House and @arden and other magazines which come 1n large rolled or heavy flat size.
Another feature of the invention consists in the arrangement of several of the parts such that an llluminatlon compartment 1s 7 provided for exterior exposure. The third feature of the invention consists in the ad j ustable construction and full telescopic association of the two body portions of the mail box.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
Fig. 1 is a central sectional view of the mail box embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
In the drawings the mail box is shown of an adjustable depth only. It extends from side to side of an exterior wall and has openings normally closed by closures and exposed tovthe inside and outside. The back portion of the mail box includes a channel shaped member having the bottom 10 and sides 11. Another channel shaped member having the top 12 and sides 13 overlaps the bottom memher as at 14 and said overlapping portions are mates with the sides 11 of both form a lateral rectangular opening that is adapted to rechannels to pro ecting portion having a.
'ceive and support'a frame 19 that pivotally Supports as at 20 a plate'or door 21 provided with the knob 22. The plate orframe 19 and door 121 are exposed upon the inside wall of the house when the mail boxis' incorporated therein. l I
The rear" half of the mail box iconstruction ls therefore, a rigid box'with a lateral extension at one end that receives and supports a frame, in turn pivotally supporting a closure. said box being comprised of three channel shaped members, one of which has an angular en V The front portion of the mail box includes a channel member including the bottom. and the sides 31. Another 'channelmember 1ncluding the top 32 and the sides 33 overlaps the sides 31' as at 34. Another channel member having the front face 35 includes an I 36 thatoverlaps the bottom cooperate with the'edges 38 and form an 1 inclined closed chute forming lateral extension of the front box arrangement. Another U-fshaped member having the sides 41 and the bottom 42 overlapsthe sides 38 at its forward portion and projects beyond the inclined portion and forms with the lattera triangular compartment-43. A rectangular frame 44 is suitably supported by thereotangular construction including the top :32, the sides 41 andjthe bottom 42. The plate or frame 44 is shown secured to the aforesaid through the angle members 45. The plate 44 includes a threat portion 46, the face of which is inclined to the vertical and is closed by a cover 48 pivotally supported at 49 bythe plate. An open'ingf50 in'the plate 44 is closed by a light transmitting'medium 51 and behind the same and in the triangular compartment 43 may be mounted a source of illumination 52. i
The frame also supports as at 53 a button 54 that maybe associatedwith a switch of an electric circuit arranged to energize the usual till.
ably connected to a switch within the house for connection to the source of energy when it is desired to illuminate the plate 51, which plate may be provided with suitable legending if desired.
The dimensions of the construction are preferably of the following character: The width IV is fixed and that normally is such that the mail box will be readily receivable between two parallel studs. The length or height of the mail box from top to bottom is indicated by the dimension L and is likewise fixed. It is somewhat greater than the overall length of magazines of the character hereinbefore mentioned. The depth ofthe box is adjustable and the same is accommodated to the depth or thickness of the wall that receives and mounts the box. The front and back portions of the box have their open ends fully telescopic for the aforesaid adjustment. Each box, in addition to having the full opening end at one end, includes a lateral extension at the other-end and toward one corner of the box, said extension being normally closed by a pivotally supported closure. The two extensions are preferably diagonally positioned when the front and back portions are associated together so that the dotted line XX in Fig. 1 represents one extreme diagonal and the dotted line YY represents an intermediate diagonal. Both diagonals, it will be observed, provide substantially continuous inclined free passage from the inlet opening covered by the closure 48 to the outlet or discharge opening covered by the closure or door 21.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a mail box, a main body portion, a lateral extension at one end including an inclined portion leading therefrom toward the body mid-portion for chute formation, and a- U-shaped member having its sides coincident with the extension sides and one edge of the intermediate portion associated with the inclined portion. to form a triangular compartment therewith beneath the extension.
2. In a mail box, a main body portion, a lateral extension at one end including an inclined portion leading therefrom toward the body mid-portion for chute formation, a U- shaped member having its sides coincident with the extension sides and one edge of the intermediate portion associated with the inclined portion to form a triangular compartment therewith beneath the extension, and a single rectangular plate having superposed openings therein one registering with the extension and the other with the triangular compartment.
In witness whereof, we, have hereunto afiixed our signatures.
WILL D. REDRUP. JOHN C. GUSTAFSON.
