Class 126 A fireguard comprises a plurality of dissimilar guards which when not in use are stored in housings adjacent the fireplace and when required for use are drawn horizontally from their housings and disposed across the fireplace. In the embodiment described each of three arcuate fireguards 13,14, 15 is made in two sections, each section being closed in by a segment-shaped top arcuate housings disposed on each side of the fireplace and opening in the fireplace surround. The outermost fireguard 15 is of wire mesh and its two sections may be withdrawn from the housings and connected across the front of the fire, the top being closed in by a segment-shaped top 39 of wire mesh which when not in use is disposed in a housing beneath the hearth. A fireguard 14 of sheet metal of the same height as the mesh fireguard 15 may be similarly placed across the fire or the innermost fireguard 13 made of sheet metal, the height of which is half that of the other fireguards 14, 15 may be used. Each fireguard is provided with rollers 16. Kuides 21 are provided on the upper and lower faces of the housings in each of which the wall nearest the fire is covered with heatresisting material. Each housing is covered at the front by a cover plate provided with slots through which the fireguards 13, 14, 15 pass. A door 30 may cover the entrance to each housing when the fireguards are not in use. The two sections of each fireguard may be connected by a catch which can only be unfastened by the use of two hands.
