This invention relates to caps and particularly to what might be termed military. caps; and the object of the invention is to provide 8 means for ventilating caps of the class specified in such manner as to render the ventilating means substantially concealed when the cap is in use; a further object being to provide means for closing the ventilating portion or area thereof, said means constituting the usual finishing strip or chin strap employed in caps of the class specified; a further object being to provide the front end portion of the head encircling band of a cap 4 with a plurality of vents or passages formed in a reinforcing or stiffening member employed in the construction of the head encircling bandof thecap; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consist s in a cap of the class and for the purpose specified which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed ashereinafter described and claimed. 7 V I The invention is fully disclosed in the fol- I lowing specification, of which the accom-' panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in'which:

For the purpose of illustrating one use of my inventionQI have shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, a military cap consisting of a head encircling band portion 5 at one end of which is arranged a forwardly and downwardly inclined peak (Band to the upper end of which is attached a crown 7, the diameter of which partial section on the line 33 is greater than that'of the band 5, the forward end 7 a of the crown being inclined 11pwardly as seen at 7 b and the top of the crown being relatively flat as in other caps of this class. i i v Arranged within the head encircling band 5 is an annular reinforcing or stiffening strip 8 preferably composed of openwork material to render the same light in weight and also to provide a ventilator for the cap as later described. The strip 8 in the construction shown consistsjof a woven body of straw, reed or similar material which is so fashioned as to form comparatively large openings 8a therein as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, The strip 8 is attached to the upper and lower ends of the band 5 in order to render said band substantially stiff and to maintain the same in upright position, and yet permitting'the fiexure thereof. Arranged within the strip 8 is a sweat band 9. which is attached to the lower edge of the band 5 and'the sweat band 9 is provided at the front .end port-ion of the cap with a plurality of circumferentially spaced vent apertures 9a arranged in alinement with the ap- The freeend of each strap member lland I I 12 is'provided with a guide loop 11a-12a through which the other strap member is free to pass and said loops have projecting 'finger pieces llb'and 12?) by means of whlch the separate members 11' and 12 may be properly adjusted upon the band 5 of the cap toarrangethe same snugly thereon, the width of the strap members 11 and 12 being such as to completely cover the opening or aperture 50; in said band.

Then the cap is used in normal tempera ture or in cold or cool weather, the strap members will be arranged snugly upon the band 5 and act as closures for the opening 5a. However, in hot weather or when the temperature is such as to cause the wearer to sweat, the strap members 11 and 12 may be separated to a slight extent in the manner seen in the several figures of the drawing so as to permit the passage of air in back of said strap members through the openwork strip 8 and the openings 9a in the sweat band to ventilate the cap and thus reduce excessive heating of the head.

It is to be noted that the slight extension of the strap members will not expose the ventilating aperture except by close inspection, thus maintaining a neat and finishedappearance which is desired for military purposes.
