Description

" July 14, 1931. c. R. ROBINSON 1,814,856
SKIRT RETAINING DEVICE Filed Oct. 29, 1930 INVENTOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented July 14, 193i CAROL RHOADES ROBINSON, OF 1\TEW YORK, N. 'Y.
SKIRT RETAINING DEVICE Application filed October 29, 1930. Serial No. 491,919.
This invention relates to a skirt-retaining device, and more particularly to a device adapted-to embrace the limb of a wearer and to secure a skirt in any desired position.
5 The invention has for its object generally the provision of an improved device of the character described, which is e'flicient, economical and readily manufactured.
More specifically, the object of the invention is to provide a device which will prevent articles of clothing assuming undesired positions on the wearer.
Another object is to provide a means for retaining a skirt in normal position when it is subjected to displacing influences, particularly while driving car.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part app-ear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and the relation of elements which will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description 39 taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows the device in position upon an operator of a vehicle;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device; and
5 Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring now to the drawings, a flexible member 11 is shaped to embrace the outside of the limb of a wearer and to catch an edge or lower portion of a garment, as for example, a skirt or coat, between it and the limb. Attached to one end of member 11 is a retaining-arm or prong 12, which extends in the general relative direction of the member 11 and is positioned so as to engage with a garment on a wearer preferably at a height of a few inches above its lower edge. Arm 12 may be frictionally or rigidly attached to member 11. A preferred form shown in the drawings has them integral but offset and in parallel planes. The tip 13 of the prong is preferably widened and of a shape such togive a greater bearing area to engage with the garment. The member 11 may be adjusted at such an angle about the limb that the prong bears against the garment between the limbs of the wearer so securely that gusts of wind are unable to dislodge the garment and cause it to flare.
' The entire device may be of any spring like-material; for example, spring steel or be tortoise shell or the embracing member may be flexible and the prong of a more rigid material. The whole may be given an attractive covering or surface design as desired.
The device of the present invention is applied upon any humanlimb to restrain a fluttering garment,,especially to hold down a. skirt when the wearer is in a swiftly-moving vehicle, such as automobiles, motor boats and the like.
The device, when in use, is put in place by snapping the flexible portion about a human limb; for example, in the region of the knee. It may or may not gather in and bind a portion of the garment to be retained between I itself and the limb. The entire device is preferably set in such a position that the extending arm presses against those portions of the garment which have a tendency to blow in the wind, such as the skirt of a dress, and acts as a bar to restrict the displacement and to restrain the skirt from flying.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A skirt-retaining device, comprising a spring clasp to fit a limb of a wearer and an $5 arm offset from one end of said clasp and substantially in a plane perpendicular to the plane of said clasp.
2. A skirt-retaining device, one metallic arcuate portion of which is adapted to grip 1 a limb of a wearer and a section of a skirt, and another portion of which is adapted to limit the motion of another section to its normal extent.
3. A skirt-retaining device, comprising a spring member adapted to envelop the outer side of a limb and an extension projecting in a plane parallel to the horizontal plane of said member toward the other limb and in the vertical plane normally occupied by a garment encircling the limbs.
4. A skirt-retaining device, comprising a limb-embracing spring member and a tind protruding from said member, the end of said tind being widened to retain a garment in the vertical plane of said tind.
5. In a skirt-retaining device, the combination of a spring clasp adapted to grip a section of a skirt around a portion of the periphery of the limb of the wearer and an arm integral with one end of and parallel to the plane of said clasp.
6. A skirt-retaining device, comprising a spring member adapted to envelop the outer side of a limb and an extension projecting in a plane parallel to the horizontal plane of said member toward the other limb and in the vertical plane normally occupied by a garment encircling the limbs, the end of said extension being widened to retain the garment in the vertical plane of said extension.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CAROL RHOADES ROBINSON.
