IMPROVEMENT IN LASTING APPARATUS FOR BOOTS AND S HO-ES,

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,464, dated August 22, 1876 application filed June 21, 1876.

To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that 1, DAVID MOREY, of Watsonville, Santa Cruz county, State of Galifor nia, have invented an Improved Lasting- Olamp; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to an improved clamp for lasting the upper leather of shoes and boots; and it consists of'a yoke having a screw passing through its center, and a pair Y 4 hold the leather more strongly, as the strain increases.

A is a yoke, having a hole made through its center, and provided with screw-threads. Through this hole a screw, B, passes, being provided with a handle, 0, at one end, and a loosely-turning plate, D, at the other, so that the plate can rest against .the bottom of the last without moving, while the screw is turned. Each end of theyoke A is fitted to receive the handles of a pair of forceps, which have the corrugated or roughened jaws E.

The handles F are made to clasp 'a bar or pin, G, which extends across the open end of the yoke, as shown, and the joint His made so that the jaws will be closed by the separation of the handles.

The operation will then be as follows: The upper leather is brought down on each side of the last, and each of the two pairs of forceps is made to seize one of the edges. The

plate D isthen set against the bottom of the last, and the screw B is turned so as .to draw the yoke A away from the last. The action of the pins G, between the sloping sides of the handles F, will be to forcibly separate them, and thus close the jaws tighter, as the strain upon the leather increases. In order to allow the jaws to openasufliciently to receive the leather, and give the handles sufficient motion to close the jaws without slipping over the pin, each handle is notched at 13, so that they will pass each other a little when the jaws are open. When the jaws close, and the handles open, these ends will not be. separated sufficiently to allow them to slip over the pin.

Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A lasting-clamp, consisting of the yoke A, with its screw B, in combination with the forceps, having the jaws E and the handles I F, said handles being operated by means of the pin G, when the screw is turned to draw the yoke away from the last, substantially as herein described.

2. The handles F of the lasting-forceps, notched at i, so thatthey may be opened and closed sufficiently to seize the leather without separating enough to pass the pin G, substantially as herein described.
