HORS ESHOE-EXTRACTOR.
SPEOIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,692, dated December 21, 1897. Application filed April 16, 1897. Serial No. 632,404. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES WARNER BROCK-' SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of N ew' Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoe-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to horseshoe-extractors.
My object is to provide a device of the class described which will be of simple and cheap construction and can be quickly and easily applied to the shoe to remove the same.
Having the foregoing object in view the in vention consists of a horseshoe-extractor of improved construction, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view; Figs. 2 and 3, edge views, and Fig. 4 a perspective View showing the lever raised-and the extracting-jaw drawn downwardly. I
The numerals 1 and 2 designate members which are pivoted together on the bolt 3 and have jaws 4 and 5. It will be observed that the jaw4 is practically only one-half the width of the jaw 5. These jaws I shall designate as clamping-jaws, as they press against the hoof while the shoe is being extracted.
The numeral 6 designates the auxiliary or extracting jaw, adapted to lie against the jaw 4 and to constitute in connection therewith a jaw which is of the same width as the jaw 5. This jaw 6 has a shank 7 working in a guide 8, connected to the handle of the member 2, and it is provided with a slot 9, in which works the bolt 3.
The numeral 10 designates a lever pivoted to the handle 2 on a bolt 11 and provided with a crank-arm 12.
The numeral 13 designates a pitman connecting this crank-arm with another crankarm 14, projecting from the shank of the auxiliary or extracting jaw. The crank-arms are provided with lugs 15 to prevent displacement of the pitman.
The device is used in the following manner: The handle 1 is grasped with the left hand and the handle and the lever grasped in the otherhand. The extracting-jaw will then lie against the jaw 4. The extracting-j aw and the 5 5 jaw 4 are inserted on one side of the shoe, between the shoe and the hoof, and the jaw 5 inserted on the other side. The two handles are then grasped with the left hand and the operator grasps the lever with the right hand and throws the same away from him, whereupon motion is communicated by the pitman to the extracting-jaw and the shoe is drawn from the hoof.
Having thus described the invention,what
is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isv 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with members pivoted together and having jaws, one of which is of less width than the other, of an extracting-jaw movable lengthwise of the members and sliding beside the narrower jaw and adapted to form in connection therewith a jaw of practically the same width as the broader jaw, and means able longitudinally of the members, a lever,
and a connection between the lever and the extracting-jaw.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with members pivoted together and having jaws, of an extracting-jaw slidable longitudinally of the members, a lever pivoted to one member, and a pitman connected to the lever and to the extracting-jaw.
4. In a device of the class desc'ribed,'the
combination with members pivoted together on a bolt and having jaws, an extracting-jaw movable longitudinally of the members and having a slot in which the bolt works and also working in a guide connected to one member,
a pivoted lever, and a pitman connecting the lever with the extracting-jaw.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES WARNER BROGKSON.
