IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE GUN-STOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. SLQSS, dated August 22, 1876; application filed June 19, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABEL SHERMAN, of' Crown Point, in the county of" Lake and State ot' Indiana, have invented a new and useful tion; and Fig. 3, a side view of' a portion of my improvement detached.

The object of my invention is to adjust the angle of' the gun-stock relatively to the barrel, so that its angle to the gun-stock can be adjustedy to adapt it to be used in different positions that may be desirable for the gunner to assume, and also to adapt it to the eonvenience of' different persons who may want a gun-stock having a greater 0r less angle, according t'o their shape, or the habit of using gunstocks having greater' or less angle.

My invention consists of the joint and the devices for Opening, closing, and holding it in any desired position, as hereinafter more fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a gun-barrel, which may be made of' any of' the known styles, either for long or short range, and either breech or muzzle-loading. The drawing', however, shows a breech-load ing rifle adapted for long-range shooting.

B is the gun-stock, which is made in two pieces, C and D. The piece C is secured to the gun-barrel in any of the known ways, an`d the piece D is hinged to the piece C at E by two metallic strips, F and G. The top 'strip G is rmly secured to the piece D by screws, while themetallic strip F tits in a groove in the piece D, so that it slides therein, as hereinafter described. His a lug attached to the plate F. rIhe plates I and J are attached rmly to the piece D. L is a setscrew, which passes through a slot in the plate F, and screws into the plate I. The object of this set-screw is to hold the plate F in position in its groove. It also may be used to tighten it so as to hold the joint E open or closed, as hereinafter described.

M is a thumb-screw, which screws into the lug H, and slides the piece D on the plate F, and thereby turns it on the hinged piece G, while at the same time vthe plate F moves 011 its hinge at E, and remains in its groove in the piece D.

By turning the thumbscrew M in one direction, the piece D is thrown up into the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. It is thrown into that position by the piece D being` slid on the plate F, and opening the joint at E, by raising the hinged piece Gr, to which the shoulder-piece D of' the stock is firmly secured. By turning the thumb-screw M in the opposite direction, it brings it back into place by closing the joint at E. The plates F and Gr are both vibrated on their hinges, but the shoulderpiece of the stock, being firmly attached to the plate Gr, turns upon its hinge while it slides back and forth on the plates F. rIhe plate F vibrates on its hinge, and remains in itsl groove and supports the-shoulder-piece at any angle at which it is placed.

N is an annular plate attached to the piece (l, and passes over the end of the shoulderpiece D, so as to cover the joint at E.

It will be observed that this plate may be attached to either the piece C or D, and would laccomplish the result of covering the joint E, if' allowed to slip loosely upon the piece to which it is not attached.

Having thus fully described the construction of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. rIhe gun-stock B, made of two pieces, and attached together by two hinged plates, F and G, one plate being firmly secured to both pieces of the stock, and the other made adjustable on one of the pieces' thereof, substantially as specified.
