VILSON DUNCAN, OF COUCU. BLUFFS, IO\VA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ("YEORGE CARSON, OF SAME PLACE.
CHIN RIFLE-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 455,827', dated July 14, 1891.
Application lcd February 10, 1890. Renewed May 27, 1891. Serial No.394,256. (No model.)
T cti/Z whom t may concer/2,:
Be it known that l, vWILSON DUNCAN, a citi# zen of the United States, residing at Council luffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chin Rifle-Rests; and
1 do declare thefollowing to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which ro it appertains to make and use the same, reterence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which torni a part of this specification.
My invention is in the nature of a chin-rest for rifles, inuskets, fue.
It has for .its object to furnish a chin-rest for such arms which may be permanently or removably secured to the stock, and which, zo when secured, may be adjusted to suit any person or any distance to which the sights may be adjusted.
X-Vith these objects in view my invention consists in the improved construction, ar-
rangement, and combination ot parts hereinafter described, and at'terwan'l speci l'ically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying d rawi ugs, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the side of a rifle op- 3o posite that to which the chin-rest is secured, showing part of the means t'or securing the rest to the stock, the forward part ot the barrel being broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side, showing the chinrest in place in side elevation. Fig. C3 is a side elevation, on an enlarged scale, of the chin-rest removed from the rifle and Fig. et is a vertical sectional view taken on thc plane ot' the line y yy of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they occur in the various Iigures of the drawings.
Referring to the dran-'ingsl by letters oi. reference, a is the stock ot a rific or muskct. 15 h is a band ot' leather encompassing the same and nearly surrounding it immediately behind the small portion c or grip of the stock. This band is secured in place on the stock by straps l e, passing' under the stock 5o and fastened by buckles fg and a strap 71,
passing around the breech i and secured by a buckle j, all these straps being provided with series of holes lo to adapt the device to stocks of different sizes. Upon this band the chin-rest is secured in the following manner, to wit: Gis a metal plate secured to the band l) by rivets m. (See Fig. 2.) In this plate is Secured a threaded center-pin B, upon which is loosely placed a disk A and held in place, when adjusted to the desired position, by means of a nut B', threaded on center-pin B. (See Figs. 2 and 4.) To one side of the center of this diskA is provided aradially-arranged dovetail slot E, in which is placed a dovetail block D, which, by virtue of its threaded per toration, is adapted to receive a threaded stem G, projecting from a cylindrical chin-rest F, the end of the stem G under the disk A holding the parts in any desired position to which they may be adjusted by pressure against plate C when tightly screwed down.
rlhe chin-rest is composed of a wooden cylindrical body, the metal stem G, as before described, and a rubber cushion or covering I.
As will be readily understood, the disk A can be adjusted around the center-pin B to bring its slot E to any angle, and can there be secured by nut B and the chin-rest by means of the dovetail slot and block, and may be adjusted to any position between the center and circumference of the disk A and be there secured by stem G. These two adj ustments combined permit of the adjustment of the chin-rest F to any point in the surface of the disk A.
By means of the adjustable straps and buckles the plate C and all of its attachments may be adj usted forward and backward and up and down on the Stock.
By the combined adjustments of the plate C on the stock, the disk A around the center pin, and the chin-rest Fin the radial groove the chin-rest can be brought to position to suit any person using the arm, no matter how the sights may be adjusted for range, and the use of this chin-rest properly adj usted enables the rifle to be firmly held, and steadies the aim, resisting all pulse vibrations or nerve deflections, and greatly increasing the accuracy of the shooting.
ICO
EST AVAILABLE COF It desired, the plate C may be rigidly seeured by letting it into the stock and securing it by screws.
Having thus fully described my invention, whaty I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A chin-rest. torrides, consisting' of a projecting bar secured to the side of the stock, as set forth. f
2. A chin-rest for riiles, consisting of a projecting bar adjust-ably secured to the side of the stock, as set forth.
3. In Combination, a chin-rest, a rotating disk upon which it is mounted, and a plate upon which said disk is mounted, secured to the side of the stock, as set forth.
jt. In combination, the chin-rest, the rotating disk, the plate upon which the disk is mounted, and the band to which the plat-e is secured, provided with means for securing it. to the stock, as set forth.
5. In combination, a chin-rest, a rotating disk upon which itis mounted,'and a plate upon which the dishr is mounted, adjustably secured to the stock, as set forth.
G. In combination, a plate secured to the stock, a rotating disk mounted thereon and having a radial groove, an d a Chin-rest adj ustabl)T secured in said groove, as set forth.
7. In combination, the band and its adj ust able fastenings, the plate secured thereto, the Center-pin mounted therein, the disk rotatable on said pin and having radial dovetail groove, the nut for securing it as rotated, the block movable in said groove, and the ehinrest having its stem threaded into said block, as set forth.
