To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HANs PAULSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orting, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Rear Sight for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to firearm sights, and aims to provide a novel and improved rear sight which is readily applicable to firearms and quickly and accurately adjusted for different ranges, the device being simple and inexpensive in construction as well as practical, reliable and efficient in use.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved rear sight.

Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.

In carrying out the invention there is provided a channel-shaped base 1 having upon its bottom a transverse dove-tailed piece 2 adapted to fit in a dove-tailed groove of a firearm to apply the base 1 to the barrel. Disposed longitudinally within the base 1 between its flanges is a fiat tongue or leaf 3 pivotally mounted upon a transverse pin 4 extending through the flanges of the base near one end thereof, and a leaf spring 5 is carried by the bottom of the base and presses upwardly against the tail of the tongue 3 for swinging the long arm of said tongue downwardly.

Upstanding screws or adjustable seats 6 threadedly engage the base adjacent to the side flanges thereof and are in staggered arrangement, the side edges of the tongue 3 having notches 7 for accommodating said screws, which are employed for holding the tongue 3 at various positions for various ranges.

Secured to th te m n l f the long arm of the tongue 3 is a sight block 8 having a recess 9 exposing the sight plate 10 secured to said block across said recess and provided with a sight notch 11 through which the fore sight is brought in line with the target.

A transverse slide or member 12 is disposed upon the tongue 3 for longitudinal sliding adjustment, and is provided with lower bent back lugs or lips 13 engaging under the edge portions of the tongue 3 for guiding said slide for longitudinal movement and holding it and the tongue 3 assembled. The slide 12 is seatable upon the screws or seat elements 6 between the lips 13 at the opposite ends thereof, and said slide 12 is provided with outstanding ears or finger pieces 14 projecting over the flanges of the base in order to be readily grasped by the thumb and finger for raising the slide and tongue in order that the slide can be adjusted for raising and lowering the sight block for a diiferent range.

By raising the slide 12, it is removed from the respective screw 6, and can be slid longitudinally of the tongue to a different adjustment, the tongue being graduated to assist in the adjustment of the sight for various ranges, and when the slide 12 is brought to a new position and released, it is seated upon the respective screw 6 under the tension of the spring 5, and the screw. in projecting between the respective pair of lips or lugs 13 will prevent the accidental sliding of the slide due to the recoil or jars to which the firearm is subjected. When the slide 12 is adjusted near the pivot 4E, and seated upon the respective screws 6, the sight block is elevated for longer ranges, and the further the slide is located from the pivot 4, the lower down will the sight block be located for shorter ranges. If it is found that the slide 12 when positioned for a certain range does not provide for an accurate hit, the respective screw 6 can be adjusted either upwardly or downwardly to the proper position, which is true of all of the screws.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
