Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,172, dated August 15,1876; application filed May 27, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, PETER D. HOWARD and MATT. ALLARD, of La Porte, Black Hawk county, Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Privy-Seat, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish a privy-seat, which shall be so constructed that people cannot stand upon it and-soil it, so that it shall always be clean and in a condition to be used.

The invention consists in a privy-seat formed by the combination of the seat, the end boards, the front board, the hinged rear board, the pivots and the cleats, with each other, as hereinafter fully described.

to the lower side of the ends of which are attached end boards E, the forwardends of of the end boards E is attached the front board I, the lower parts of the ends of which project beyond the cleats G, to prevent the forward edge of the seat D from ever rising above a level. When the seat D is level, its rear edge rests upon a cleat, J, attached to the rear wall A. To theunder. side of the. rear part of the seat D,just in front of the cleat J, is hinged the rear board K, the lower part of the ends of which project, soas to strike against the cleats G when the seat is tilted'into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and prevent the said seat from being tilted so far that its forwardedge may pass beneath the floor (J. The hinged board K should overbalance the weight of the other parts of the seat, so as to hold said seat in a horizontal position.

With this construction should a person attempt tostand upon the seat D, to use the privy, the seat will tilt, so that he cannot stand upon it, and thus the seat D will always be kept clean.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A privy-seat formed by the combination of the seat D, end boards E E, front board I, hinged rear board K, pivots F, and cleats G H J, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
