UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUSSELL G. DUDLEY, OF NE\VARK, NEIV JERSEY.
COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,128, dated Q-ctober 4 1887.
Application filed November 4,1856. Serial No. 218,003. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL G. DUDLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chair and Step-Ladder; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View of my invention in the form of a chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same in one form of a step-ladder. Fig. 3 isa vertical longitudinal section of another form of the step-ladder. Fig. 4 is a detail section.
My invention relates to a combined chair and step-ladder; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and B designate the rear legs of the chair, said legs being continued up ward to form the back rails of the chair. The back rails of the chair form the rear legs of the stepladder.
G designates the rigid portion of the chairseat, which is strengthened by metal straps D, which connect the rear legs, A B, and the front legs, E F, to the seat proper. An extension, G, is hinged to the front edge of the seat 0, and when opened forms a portion of the seat 0. The hinged extension G is provided with a round, H, which, when the device is in the chair form, is parallel with and contiguous to the round N between the front legs of the chair. The extension G is provided with legs K L, which are connected by a transverse bar, H, which forms a step of itself at one time-- z'. e., when the device is used as a step-ladder-and forms a round or crossbrace, in conjunction with a brace, N, between the front legs of the seat portion proper when the device is adjusted to the chair form. The legs K L are provided near their lower ends with pivoted'metal loops or links I which, when folded up out of the way, enter notches Q in the front edges of the legs K L. In the chair form these loops embrace the chair-legs E F and serve to hold them in place.
The back-rest 0, between the upper ends of the back rails, is faced on its ends with metal strips to sustain wear, and is pivoted near what I term its normal upper edge between metal plates R on the inner faces of the back rails. The upper ends of metal straps S S are pivoted to the end edges of the back-rest O and pass through wire guideloops T, driven into the inner faces of the back rails. These straps S S are provided at their lower ends with flanges or stops, which prevent the withdrawal of the straps S S from the guide-loops T. Notches U are made in the straps S S near their lower ends to engage the guide-loops T, to hold the back-rest O in a horizontal position to form the top step when the device is adjusted to form a step-ladder. The legs of the extension are provided near their outer ends with stoplugs X X, which form rests and stops for the top step of the stepladder when the device has been adjusted to that form. The metal loops P embrace the upper ends of the back rails of the chair when the device is changed to the step-ladder form.
Below the back-rest O, I provide an auxiliary back-section, Z, which is pivoted at the ends of So its upper edge between the back rails of the chair, said back rails being metal-faced at the pivoted points. This back-section Z is also metal-faced along its ends to sustain wear. Metal straps a a are secured to the ends'of the auxiliary back-section Z, near the front edge of the same, and extend down through recesses b b in the chair-scat and through guide-loops or staples c c, driven into the inner faces of the back rails below the chair-seat. The lower ends of the metal straps a a are provided with flanges or stops, which prevent the metal straps from being withdrawn from the staples c c. The metal straps a a are provided with notches d d, which engage the staples c 0 when the back-section Z is raised to form a step.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The con1bination,with the chair-back, the back-rest hinged thereto, devices for supporting the same horizontally, and the seat fixed to the back and front legs, of the extension hinged to the seat and provided with stop-lugs, and the metal loops pivoted to the outer ends of the said extension, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the back rails provided with the seat and the metal face-plates, of the pivoted back-rest provided with the pivoted notched metal plates S, the loops in the back rails, the seat and rigid legs, and the extension hinged to the forward edge of the seat and provided with the pivoted metal loops at its outer ends, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with a chair having a back step pivoted between the upper end of the back rails and pivoted supporting-straps for the said step, of a back step pivoted between the back rails below the upper step and provided with pivoted and notched metal straps at its ends, and the staples in the chair-back for supporting the pivoted metal straps, substantially as specified.
step H, notches Q, stops X X, and loops P,
substantially asspecified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL G. DUDLEY.
