UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN M. SHAW, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-RESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,483, dated February 19, 1878; applicationfiled August 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN M. SHAW, of the city of Peoria, in the county of Peoria, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Reclining-Chairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which like lettersof reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, Fig. 2 a superficial or plan View, of the foot-restbeneath the seat.
The chair is of that class in which the back can be lowered by joint and ratchet to any angle with the seat also, in which is an extensible foot-rest beneath the seat. The footrest slides upon side bars or rods, and upon stirrups or blocks in front, and has an extensible flap or cushioned board at its forward part, which'folds up or back upon the main part of the foot-rest.
One of the forms in which I construct this reclining-chair I will now describe.
A is the chair; B, arms 0, back; D,-ratchet; g, detent-pin. The ratchet ends in asmall plate or lateral lug, d, at that end opposite to its pivot, by which to raise it from its pin or button 9 in lowering the back. E represents the sliding foot-rest-a horizontal frame ending in the rear in a transverse bar, 73, which is slotted at either end (or bored) to receive the lateral rods h h, attached to either side of the chair. The rear end of this frame rests in hangers or brackets g, on either side, near the forwardend of each rod h, adjoining recessed blocks P P, which receive the upward pressure of the ends of rodiwhen the frame is extended. The frame E, or its side pieces, are curved, as shown, to cause the front end of the same to rise with a good curve, and not fall below a horizontal position. Attached to its front is a small extension frame or board, F, having lateral pins or lugs l l sliding in groovesor slots k in the sides of frame E, and resting 011 the front of latter or bar t. f
What I claim as my invention is- The sliding frame E, having slotted transverse rods t' i, in combination with lateral rods h h of the chair, hangers .or rests q q, and blocks P P, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing reclining-chair I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of August, 187 7 JOHN M. SHAW. Witnesses:
LUTHER THURLOW, H. W. WELLS.
