HAIR CUTTER ATTACHIENT Filed Jan; 30. 1929 2 She ets-Sheet 1' June2, 1931.1 w. J. VAN OSDEL I HAIR CUTTER ATTACHIENT Filed Jan. 30, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 2, 1931 UNITED STATES WILLIAM J. VAN OSDEL, OF CHICAGQ ILLINOIS HAIR CUTTER ATTACHMENT Application filed January 30, 1929.. Serial No. 336,116.
This invention relates to improvements in hair cutters and has for one of its objects to provide an improved guard or gage adapted for convenient attachment and by means of which attachment the length of the cut may be varied.
A further object is to provide an improved attachment or gage of this character which may be detachably secured to the cutter so that it may be readily removed and reversed according to the length of cut desired.
A further object is to provide improved means for detachably securing the guard or cutter in position. r
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention and in which i Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cutter having a guard or gage constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure l, with parts broken away.
Figure 3 is asectional view taken on line 33, Figure 1,. 011 an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the guard or gage detached from the cutter and with the fastening device in position with respect thereto. 1
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the guard or gage.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of one form of fastening device. Figure 7 is a perspective view of another form of fastening device.
Figures 8, 9 and 10 are diagrammatic views showing theme of the cutter with the in different positions. I r i Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 15 designates generally a clipper of any desired constructlon having a bottom cutter plate 16 upon which a cutter plate 17 reciprocates in the ordmary and well known manner. p V
gage
l The bottom plate 16 is provided with an upwardly inclined surface 18 on its lower face adjacent the teeth of the plate.
The numeral 19 designates generally the guard or gage which consists of a body portion having a flat central lower surface 20. The edges of the plate 19 on opposite sides of said central portion are shaped to form combs or guard finger-s 21-22, and these fingers project upwardly from the central portion 20 re spectively as at 23-24. V The teeth or fingers 21-22 are each pro-- vided with upwardly projecting guard heads 2526 adjacent the extremities thereof and the plate 19 is provided with shoulders 2728 in the upper face thereof adjacent the bottoms of the respective fingers 2122, for a purpose to be set forth.
Arranged in the upper face of the plate 19 is a recess 29 which extends entirely across the plate and arranged within the recess is a fastening device embodying a spring body portion which is adapted for longitudinal adjustment. As shown in Figures 4 and 6, the body portion of the fastening device is bent back and forth upon itself as at 30 to form a longitudinally adjustable spring and connected to the ends of the spring are rigid clips 31 and 32 which project upwardly from the face of the plate 19 and are adapted to ei'igage the lateral edges of the bottomplate 16 of the clipper.
The fastening deviceis secured in position to the plate 19 in any suitable manner preferably by means-of a rivet 33 which passes through an opening 34 in the clip 31 and into a corresponding opening 35 in the plate 19. The other clip is provided preferably with a slot 36 through which a fastening device 37 passes and which enters an opening 38 in the plate 19. a p a If desired, the fastening device may be provided with a body portion having a central section 39 which may be fastened by means of a fastening device passing through an opening 40 and into an opening in the plate 19. On the opposite side of this portion 39 the body is shaped to form portions bent back and forth upon themselves as at ll to form longitudinally adjustable portions, and connected to the respective portions 41 are rigid clips 42 which are adapted to engage the side edges of the comb plate of the clipper. Each of these clips may be provided with slots 43 through which fastening devices may pass so that the clips may be adjustable with respect to the body of the gage or guard 19.
The fingers 21 and 22 of the guard or gage are of different thicknesses so as to provide for cutting of hair of different lengths.
In use, the guard or gage is applied to the bottom cutter plate 16 by causing the rear edge of the plate 16 to abut one of the shoulders 27-28 according to the position of the attachment. The forward edges of the teeth of the bottom cutter plate 16 will then engage one or the other of the upwardly projecting guard heads 25-26 on the respective teeth 21-22, when the guard or gage plate is forced into position upon the bottom cutter plate. As the guard or gage is forced into this position the clip 32, in the form shown in Figure 6, if such form of clip is used, and the clips 42, in the form shown in Figure 7, if the latter is used, will yield so as to permit the guard or gage to be placed in position. so that the upwardly inclined upper face thereof will contact with the upwardly inclined lower surface 18 of the fingers of the bottom cutter plate 16 throughout the entire length of the latter.
The clipper may he then used as shown in Figure 8, that is with the inclined surface 23 of the guard or gage moving over the surface from which the hair is to be cut.
The guard or gage may be readily removed from the bottom cutter plate by forcing the same therefrom, the body portion of the fastening clips yielding to permit of such operation. The guard or gage may then be reversed so that the other set of fingers thereon will be adjacent the free extremities of the fingers on the bottom cutter plate and the guard then fastened to the bottom mitt-er plate, after which the clipper may be used in the manner shown in Figure 9. for a different length cut.
As shown in Figure 10, a still different length cut may be obtained by moving the lower surface 20 of the guard or gage plate 19 over the surface from which the hair is to be cut.
\Vith this improved construction it will be manifest that there is provided a guard or gage which is adapted for cutting three different lengths, that is by the use of the center portion 20 as a gage to move over the surface from which the hair is to be cut, or by adjusting the respective fingers 2122 so that they will be adjacent the cutting edge of the clipper.
T he fastening device embodying the longitudinally yielding spring elements may be formed of any suitable material.
\Vhile the preferred forms of the invention have been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
