Patented Dec. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES zsaz'zt TENT OFFICE 1 Claim. ((31. 30-30) This invention relates to a hair cutting attachment adapted to be connected to a comb.

One of the objects of my invention is the provision of a device of this character in which safety razor blades having backs may be removably secured in the blade holder by frictional engagement with the back of the blade.

Another object of my invention is the'provision of a comb holder adapted to be mounted on the comb on which the blade holder is adjustably mounted by coacting members on the holders and are held in engagement with each other by a spring member extending from the blade-engaging portion of the blade holder over the holder for the back of the comb.

Another object of my invention is the provision of coacting adjusting members between the holders whereby, by pressure of the thumb on a portion of one holder and of the fingers on the other holder, the coacting adjusting members on the holders may be separated and shifted relative to each other by the thumb and fingers on one hand.

Another object of my invention is the provision of means to remove the blade from the comb during the shifting of one holder relative to each other.

Another object is the provision of adjusting means between the holders which will retain them in parallelism regardless of their adjusted positions.

Another object is the provision of coacting means fixedly mounted on the holders for retaining them in operative position relative to each other when the comb and blade are removed from their holders.

Another object is the provision of a blade holder which can be formed from plastic material by extrusion.

Having now described in a general way the nature and purpose of this invention, I will proceed, for illustrative purposes, to a detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a face view of the cutting blade holder attached to the back of a comb;

Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 on a slightly larger scale;

Figure 3 is a rear View of the device with a portion of a comb;

Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2; and

Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 of Figure 1.

In the drawings, a comb I0 is slidably seated in a comb supporting holder l2 of U-shape formed of spring sheetstock, having a leg it which engages one face of the comb I0 and a leg l6 which is bent upon itself and is provided at its upper end with a flange I 8 preferably extending the full length of the holder.

Mounted on the comb holder l2 is a cutting blade holder 28 also of U-shape, preferably of plastic, the leg 22 of which is provided with a recess for the reception of the heel of a cutting blade 24. The inner face of the leg 22 is provided with a thickened portion preferably the full length of support which is provided with notches or parallel grooves 26 for the reception of the fiange l8 on the comb holder. The leg 22 and the other leg 28 of the blade holder 20 are slotted as shown at 3B and slidably mounted in the slot in leg 22 is a finger piece 32 which is connected to the flange l8 on the comb holder 12. Connected at both ends to the leg [4 of the comb holder 12 is a leaf spring 34 having an offset 36 which slidably engages the portion of the slot 38 in the leg 28 of the blade holder 21!.

The cutting blade 24 is frictionally held in the groove in the end of leg 22 of the blade holder 20. This end groove, the grooves 26 and the crossbar connecting the legs l4 and I6 and forming the end seat for the combs are all in parallel with the flange l8 so that the cutting edge of the blade is always parallel with the cross bar of the comb holder, and, when the comb is properly seated in the comb holder and if the comb is provided as usual with a back parallel with the edges of the comb teeth, the edge of the cutting blade will be parallel with the ends of the teeth regardless of the adjustment of the blade holder with the comb holder.

The U-shaped comb holder forms a perfect hand hold for handling the device when cutting hair or when adjusting the blade. When adjusting the blade, the blade holder is grasped between the thumb on the leg 22 and the four fingers on the leg 28. The finger piece 32 is then pressed inwardly with the thumb a distance to clear the teeth between the grooves 23. The blade holder can then be raised or lowered to the desired position with the fingers pressed against the leg 28 and when the desired adjustment has been reached, the finger piece 32 is released and the sp ing 34 will return the flange I8 into the groove in line therewith.

During the shifting of the comb holder relative to the blade holder and the engagement of the finger piece 32 and the offset 36 of the spring 34 3 in seat 39, the flange 18 on the comb holder and the grooves 26 in the blade holder will be retained in parallelism with each other.

By the pressure of the thumb on the finger piece 32 and of the fingers on the leg 28 of the comb holder, the edge of the blade 24 will be shifted clear of the comb and thus prevent cutting the teeth of the comb by the downward movement of the blade holder relative to the comb.

After the blade holder has been adjusted, care should be taken to see that the back of the comb is properly seated in the comb holder.

When the comb is removed from the holder, the pressure of the spring 34 will retain the holders in connection with each other.

As the groove for the cutter blade 24 and the grooves 26 for the reception of the flange l8 on one leg of the comb holder are parallel to each other as well as to the legs of the blade holder, the body of the blade holders can be extruded from plastic material in long strips, then cut to length and slotted in the same operation, thus producing holders for the cutters at a low cost.

It will be evident that variations of the invention may be made without departing from the principles thereof as defined in the following claim.

What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

A hair cutting attachment adapted to be connected to a comb comprising a comb holder having a pair of legs for straddling the back of a comb, a U-shaped blade holder having legs straddling the comb holder, a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves in one of the legs of the blade holder, a flange on one of the legs of the comb holder adapted to be seated in any one of said grooves to vary the positions of the holders relative to each other and a spring between the other legs of the holders for retaining the flange in a predetermined groove to retain the holders in predetermined adjusted positions relative to each other.
