2 Claims. or. 30-43 1 This invention relates to the construction of shaving implements in general, and more particularly to a type known as Dry Razors or Electric Shavers; and is filed as a continuation in part of my copending application 'S.N. 624,637, filed November 27, 1956.
The. present invention relates mainly to the structure of the shearing section; and the manner in which it performs its function.
In accordance with my invention, I produce a shaving implement comprising a handle having a portion thereof forming a shearing section, and wherein such handle is provided with means for operating such shearing section for shaving purposes, and wherein such shearing section comprises a base portionand actuating elements carrying a removable cutter bar, and means for preventing displacement of such cutter bar from the said actuating element; and wherein such cutterbar is provided with two longitudinally disposedside end. faces each having two spaced longitudinal'cutting edges disposed in a parallel'manner ,with respect to each other; and wherein the shear plate is removable from the cutter bar; and wherein such shear plate isprovid'ed withmeans to form a plurality of bulged portions of the skin being shaved, and with spaced individual shearing sections to underlie, individually, each of such bulged portions for cutting the hair directly at the peak of such individual bulged portions; and wherein provisionis made to prevent "biting between the shear plate and the cutter bar While securing such shear plate to the shearing section.
To illustrate the ordinary commercial utility of my shaving implement in daily life, a shaving implement constructed in accordance with my invention, of whatever shape, style or type it may be made, can be utilized to great advantage; for example, in the ordinary kind of this type of shaver, the cutter bar must be centrally loatent For clarification purposes I desire to point out the following: v r 7 On a flat face the hair are normally positioned close to each other, so that at times two or more hair are making their way into a single-one of the shearopenings, such actioncauses a pull of the hair while shaving; such pull is termed as a burn and is very objectionable to the user. Whereas, in my structure, the skin' portion being shaved 0 is formed into bulged portions; and (as clearly shown in Figs. 9 and 10) on a bulged portion the skin is tensed, and the hair thereon are therefore spaced further apart from each other than they areon a non-tensed skin portion, so that the shearing face underlying such bulged portion can cut the hair directly at the peak of the bulge,
where the hairare mostly separated from each other and It is thus evident, that a dry shaver made in accordance'with my invention, fulfills a long-felt need in the art of makingdry shavers. The teachings of my present invention is a great contribution to the dry shaver industry. It'solves the above-mentioned problems in a complete and satisfactory manner. It teaches a new and unique form of structure not known heretofore in the art of making dry shavers.
In the view of the above, it can be readily seen that a dry shaver, made in accordance with my invention, will last longer, will operate more efliciently, will render better service to the user, and is therefore a practical and very important contribution to the dry shaver industry generally. i
The variety of possible applications of my novel construction in connection with diiferent types of shavingimplements, as hereinabove indicated, is so prolific that for the purpose of illustrating the invention the specific embodiment of my invention in its application to a shavgreatest possible commercial use. For this purpose I have selected for illustration of my novel construction,
a shaving-implementconstituting a dry-shaver, so that the'principles of construction may be best illustrated in a dry-shaver known as a dry-shaving implement.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, references-is had to the following dethe shear plate forces such cutter bar towards a sideward provided with two sets of parallel disposed shearing edgeswill, naturally, double the usefulness of such cutter bar. A shaft 15, provided with a grooved, channeled or U-shaped section 15' and with actuating elements 19, is
positioned between the two wall portions 16 and 16 and is connected to a motor 17 (connection not shown). Such motor 17 may be connected by means of its plug 18 of the cable-cord 18' to a source of power for operating the shearing section; when so connected the shaft 15 will oscillate or'move in a direction carrying the actuating elements 19 to-and-fro sidewardly, that is, from the side portion indicated by arrow B to the side portion indicated by arrow C and then back again to the side portion B.
The actuating elements 19 are each provided witha slotted portion 20 to support or hold therein a longitudi; nal cutter-bar or shearing member 21. The end portions b and b of the actuating elements 19 are shaped or bend outwardly (away from each other), thereby providing an enlarged spaced area (as indicated by arrow/I22) for serving as a leading or guiding means to facilitate the placing of the cutter-bar 21 into the slot 20,
The centrally located U-shaped section 15 is provided with two facing wall portions a and a spaced away from each other forming or providing a spaced section S therebetween. The wall portion a is provided with a plain opening 0 and the wall portion a is provided with a screw-threaded opening 0'. The upper end portions 25 of the spring element; 24 are each'shaped or bent into a V-shaped section as indicated by the letter V, or such end portions may be otherwise provided with elements .of similar shape. Such V-shaped sections are adapted to engage the lower end portion of the cutter-bar 21 for exerting spring-pressure against such cutter-bar urging the upper set of the two parallel shearing edges towards frictional engagement with the underface ofthe shearing portion or net 31 of the shear plate D for shaving purposes.
The stationary or outer shear plate indicated by arrow D comprises a frame structure 41 having the shear-net 31 secured thereto as shown at 42. This net 31 may be secured to the frame structure 41 by any suitable means; for example, solder or other forms of welding. The rearportion of such frame structure 41 may be provided with a thicker portion (or flange portion) R adapted to have a tubular opening 43 formed therein. Such tubular opening being provided with a longitudinal slot 44. The wall portions 16 and 16, or the projecting portions 45, may each be provided with a tubular screw-threaded opening 46 located in alignment with the tubular opening 43, for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained.
A spring element 24, preferably of the coil type, is positioned within the tubular opening 43 having its end portion ,48 positioned, slidably, within the slot 44; a rivet or screw-member 49 is then inserted into the opening 46 having its rear-end portion positioned loosely within'the opening 43 (or within the coil spring located within such opening 43), the other end portion 51 of the spring element is positioned upon the base portion 12; the same form or manner of structure or assemblage also applies to the other of the projecting portions 45;" thus connecting the shear plate D to the shearing section 12 or to the handle 10. The front portion 52 of thefra rne structure 41 may be provided with suitable means,'for example such as groove 53, to become interlocked with the latchhook 54 to hold the shear plate D in closed position for shaving purposes.

bars 61 may press against the face 64, during shaving operation, and form impressions or indentations 63 upon such face 64, thereby forming bulged portions 65, thus causing such skin portionsto become stretched and tensed thereby separating the hair thereon further apart from each other (particularly so at the peak portion of each of the bulged portions 65). These spaced hair are presented to the plurality of spaced shearing faces 62 in such spaced-apart position and are therefore suitably situated for being cut close to the skin: particularly son when the instrument is being moved gently over the face being shaved, in which case the peak portion of each bulged portion 65 will present the separated hair individually to the shearing openings of the shear-net 31 for close shaving as shown at 66.
The shear-plate structure D is of semi-circular shape cross-sectionally, and is formed in the following manner! its oscillatory movements) will engage frictionally theunderface of the shear-net 31 of such center portion 71 for shaving purposes; whereas, the side portions 73 and 73 of such shear plate D are spread further outwardly, that is, away from its circular line (as indicated by the phantom line 3); so that when the cutter-bar 21 will move, in its circular direction, to either one of the side portions 73 or 73, such cutter-bar will become disengaged from the side portions 'of'the shear-net 31 and be spaced away from the side portions 73 and 73', as shown by the arrows 74 and 74'. The form of structure as above described will accomplish two separate distinct and desirable functions:
First: Each time the cutter-bar 21 will movefrorn either one of the side portions 73 or 73' back towards the center portion 71, its cutting edges will engage and cut the hair, at such center portion, in the same manner as does a barbers straight knife razor; thus cutting the hair instead of mashing same while shaving, thereby eliminating pulling or burning effects and instead rendering a better, cleaner and faster shave.
Secondly: The fact that the cutter-bar 21 will be in a position spaced away from the side portions 73 and 73 while hinging, or placing, the shear-plate D into normal shaving position upon the shearing section 12, will prevent biting between the shear-net 31 and the cutting edges of the cutter-bar 21 during such hinging or placing operation; thus preventing marring of such cutting edges thereby prolonging the life and usefulness of such cutter-bar.
The cutter-bar 21 is positioned within the slotted portions of the actuating elements 19 and pressed downwardly until the pin 21' is snapped into the slot 35', thus such cutter-bar 21 is being held in position upon the actuating elements 19 and prevented from being'accidentally displaced from its position. The cutter-bar will be free to be moved upwardly or downwardly within the slotted portions 20, as indicated by the phantom line K, (Fig. 3), but will be limited in its upward movement by th pin 21' located within the slot 35 to an extent whereby such cutter-bar will not move entirely out of its position. The spring-pressure exerted by the portion 35" against the cutter-bar 21 will prevent accidental displacement of the pin 21 from the slot 35. I
The interlocking means between the spring-plate 35 and the cutter bar 21 also prevents lateral movements of the cutter-bar within the openingszll of the actuating elements 19, and also prevents movements of such cutterbar longitudinally thereof within the slots 20, thereby eliminating the necessity of providing the cutter-bar with downwardly disposed extensions to hold such bar in desired position. Thus enabling each of the longitudinal end portions of such cutter-bar 21 to be provided with desirable cutting edges.

An important feature of the present invention is the fact that my cutter-bar is provided with two sets of shearing or cutting edges, so that my cutter-bar can be reversed whenever desired and either one of the two sets of cutting edges can be utilized for shaving purposes, thus actually doubling the usefulness of my cutter-bar.
To remove, replace or re'verse the cutter-bar 21, all one has to do is to press against the bulged or extending portion 37, moving the spring-plate-portion 35" away from the cutter-bar 21 (as shown by the phantom lines 3'), thus unlocking the pin 21' and the slot 35' from each other, thereby permitting the tension of the spring 24 to urge such cutter-bar 21 upwardly (as shown by the phantom lines K, Fig. 3) for the removal of such cutter-bar from its position upon-the'actuating elements 19.
The present invention relates primarily to the construction of the shearing section and its function; the motor compartment and the motor will therefore not be described, since various typesof motors, electric or spring powered, may be utilized to operate the herein shearing section.
The shear plate D is'a structure comprising various means adapted to perform'various functions. ample, the frame structure 41 is provided with a perforated plate or net 31 having a single continuous inner shearing face of an enlarged area and a plurality of outer shearing faces each of a size smaller than the size of such inner shearing face; the openings 3" of such spaced apart shearing-faces 62 of the net 31 permit the hair of the face being shaved to pass therethrough and be exposed at the innerside of such single shearing face of the net 31; the edge portions of the openings 3" are shaped to form cutting the said net 31 as shown at 26 (Fig. 2), thereby forming a suitable frictional engagement between the shearing edges of the cutter-bar 21 and the shearing edges of the openings 3", for cutting the hair which penetratethrough such openings 3" close to the inner-face of the shear-net 31. The thickness of'the shear-plate 31 is about two or three thousandths of an inch; so that while shaving close to the skin such shear-plate 31 also acts as a shield protecting the skin being shaved from getting bruised by the cutter-bar 21.
As above explained, the shear-plate D is normally secured to the shearing section 12, or to the handle portion 10 (Fig. 2), by pivotal means; enabling such shear-plate D to be hinged into either direction. But it being understood, that such shear-plate D may be secured in position for shaving purposes by various other suitable means. The herein disclosures are for illustrative purposes only and not for limitation purposes.
It will be clearly seen that theremoval of my shearplate D from the shearing section will not remove the cutter-bar 21 from its position; this is true regardless of the manner in which the shear-plate D is secured to the shearing section, or to the handle.v
If the shear-plate D is secured to the shearing section, or to the handle,,by pivotal means; and the opening 53 of the front portion 52 is interlocked with the latch-hook 54; and it is desired to place the shear-plate D in a hinged open position; then, pressing the push-plate P For ex- (Fig. 2) inwardlywill release the front portion 52 from with t e latch-hook 54, and the inner face of the net 31' will press upon the upper cutting edges of the cutter-bar 21 which is urged (by the spring tension of the V-shaped end portions of the spring 24) upwardly towards such net 31 as indicated by numeral 26 (Fig. 2); thus forming a suitable frictional contact between such inner face of the shear-plate 31 and, the upper cutting edges of the cuter-bar 21 for shaving purposes.
The bulged portion 37 functions as a push-button to move the opening 35" away from the pin 21'; but, in addition thereto, such curved bulged portion 37 adds elasticity to the spring portion 35", it facilitates the spring-tension against the cutter bar 21, thus cushioning the touch of such portion 35 against the cutter-bar 21,

. vI desire it to be understood that the disclosures herein are for illustrative purposes'only and not for limitation purposes. For example; the structure represented by the bars indicated by the numeral 61, may be applied to various other types of shearing sections (or shearingunits which may be provided with stationary or removable shearing sections). Various suggestions and changes in form of structure may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention. The objects of the present invention are clear, and I do not desire to limit myself to the disclosures herein nor to the terms used in describing my present invention, as the disclosures herein and the descriptionof same are for illustrative purposes only and not for limitation purposes.
From the above it is clear that I have invented and perfected a new and unique form of structure in the art of making dry shaving implements, a structure which is practical, useful and beneficial to the user. Various suggestions and changes in form of structure may be resorted to, and I desire it to be understood that I have same in mind when showing and describing this invention, and seek protection by Letters Patent. And although I have mentioned in describing this invention of what material certain parts may be made, how they may be formed, shaped or styled, and how they may be assembled, yet'l desire it to be understood that this structure, or parts thereof, may be made of any suitable material, and shaped,'formed, styled or arranged in any desirable manner, and assembled in any suitable or convenient way so that the parts may be easily taken apart, removed, cleaned, replaced and/or reassembled, and that various changes in detail may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of this invention.

A shaving implement comprising a handle and a shearing section, said shearing section comprising a hingeable outer shearing member and a base portion having a non-perforated floor and two facing side walls, a shaft, said shaft secured pivotally to the said side walls, said shaft having two facing wall portions spaced away from each otherproviding a spaced section therebetween, each of said wall portions having an opening, a spring having a centrally located coiled portion and two upwardly extended end portions, a spring plate, said spring plate having two longitudinal openings, a fastening element, said coiled portion positioned within the said spaced section and the said spring plate positioned against one of the said wall portions, the said fastening element positioned within the said openings of the said wall portions and within one of the said longitudinal openings of the said spring plate and within the opening of the saidcoiled portion for holding the said coiled spring within the said spaced section of the said shaft .andithe said spring plate against one of the said wall portions, said shaft having two upwardly projecting actuating elements, said elements each having a slotted end portion, a cutter bar having at least one cutting edge, at least one of the side portions of said cutter bar having a pin extending therefrom, the said cutter bar positioned within the said slotted end portions of the said actuating elements, the said pin positioned within the other'of said longitudinal openings of the said spring plate, each of the said end portions of the said coiled spring formed into a V-shape, said V-shaped end portions positioned under the said cutter bar urging such bar upwardly, the said spring plate having a bulged portion, said bulged portion providing spring tension for urging the upper portion of said spring plate against the said cutter bar for having the said pin located within the said longitudinal opening of the said cutter bar, the said bulged portion serving as a push button for removing the said upper'p ortion of the said spring plate from the said cutter bar and from the said pin to enable the removal of such cutter bar from the said slotted-end portions, the said hingeable shearing member positionable above the said cutter bar in a stationary manner pressing against such cutter bar for fn'cr' tional engagement therewith for shearing purposes, the said pin movable within the said longitudinal opening for adjustment of the cutter bar with respect to the said frictional engagement for shaving purposes.
2. A shaving implement comprising a handle and a shearing section, said shearing section comprising an outer hingeable shear member and an inner cooperating movable shear member, said outer member having a single continuous inner shearing face, the outer face of the said hingeable shear member having a plurality of nonshearing upstanding bar portions dividing such outer face intoa plurality of separated outer shearing faces,
the said plurality of outer shearing faces having openings, the edge portions of such openings serving as cutting edges, said upstanding bar portions providing means for shaping the skin being shaved into a plurality of spaced individual bulged portions each terminating into a peak section for having the hair thereof separated further apart from each other than when in normal position and presenting such separated hair into the said openings of the said individual outer shearing faces for having the said inner movable shear member cutting the said hair while the said hingeable shear member in normal shaving position is moved upon the said skin, an actuating element, said actuating element for moving the said inner movable shear member, said hingeable shear member adapted to be hinged out of normal shaving position, and means associated with the said actuating element for preventing displacement of the said movable shear member while the said hingeable shear member is in hinged open position.
