Description

G. BROOKS.
WASHING MACHINE.
Patented Aug.8,1876.
l l l l y l INJENTOR; @Wf//K W76? N. PETERS. PHOT UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE BROOKS, OF ELSTON STATION, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,750, dated August 8, 1876; application ]ed January 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, GEORGE BROOKS, of Elston Station, county of Coles, State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The Object of my invention is to provide for a washing-machine which is easy in operation and will not injure the most delicate fabrics.
My invention consists in the construction of a square tub with a concave bottom, which I make of zinc, by preference. In the end, near the bottom, is cut a hole, in which I insert a faucet or tap, in order to draw oi the water. The tub is placed on four legs. Inside of the tub, ,in a vertical position, parallel with the sides, I place two boards or-Win gs, held to the upper part of the sides with iron brackets with notches, and pins or buttons fastened to the sidesinside ofthe tub, in such a manner that the Wings are movable. Between these Wings is placed a dasher, which is fastened to a shaft Working in journals placed in two standards, each at one end of the tub. To the front of the main shaft is fastened a walking-beam,` at the end ot' which are suspended rods connected to two treadles, the ends of which are pivoted to a cross-bar between the two hind legs of the machine. The ends of the Walking-beam are provided with handles, by aid of which the machine is worked, as well as lby the treadles.
The clothes are placed on each side of the dasher, thus held between the dasher and the movable wings, which are moved in or out to suit the amount of clothes to be washed. The dasher being operated by the movements of the Walking-beam, the soap-suds are agitated and the clothes squeezed against the wings, and thus the cleansing is eft'ectually and quickly accomplished. A
In order to more fully describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
Figure I is a plan view of a washing-machine embodying my invention. Fig. II is a front view ofthe same. Fig. III is a sectional view of the same.
A is the tub; B, the bottom; C, the Wateroutlet; D D, the legs; e, the cross-bar between the two hind legs; F F, the two movable boards or wings, with brackets g g, having notches h h; and t' z', pins or buttons placed over the brackets g g. J J are the two standards; lc k, journals in the upper ends of4 the standards; L, the main shaft; S, the dasher; M the Walking-beam. with the handles u n; o o, connecting-rods between the ends of the Walking-beam and the treadles P P, the ends of which are pivoted to the cross-bar e.
, Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The movable wings F F, provided with brackets g g, formed with notches h, h, and held to the tub with pins or buttons t' i, in combination with the tub A, dasher S, main shaft L, walking-beam M, and treadles P P, the whole being constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE BROOKS.
