Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo FRANCIS X. GARTLAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
.IMPROVEMENT IN COFFIN-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,570, dated August 1, 1876; application tiled March 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS X. GARTLAN'D, of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Fastening Handles of Burial Coflins and Gaskets; and l do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description ofthe nature thereof, sutlicient to enable others skilledin the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a face view of the handle. Fig. 2 is a view of the inner end ot' the fastening. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line :c a, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the plate or bracket and pins.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
It is well known that when handles are attached to burial coins and caskets, boxes, 85e., the leverage of the handle and slight hold of screws and strain thereon pull out the screws and release the handle. My invention is designed to remedy these detects, and consists of slotted pins cast solid with the brackets and wedging-keys, whereby thehandle will be more firmly and conveniently secured in position.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the handle, which is pivotcd or xed to the ears or brackets B, as usual. C represents pins, which are cast solid with the brackets, and in which are formed, near their ends or points, slots D, into which are fitted wedgeshaped keys E.
The handle is properly located on the article F, to which it is to be secured, and the pins L) are passed through openings in the article F. Then the keys E are driven through the slots D, and the handle will be securely connected and held to the article F.
Washers G may be interposed between the keys and article F to prevent cutting of the latter and insure the hold of the handle.
I am aware that slotted bolts with wedgeshaped locking-pins, in lieu ot' nuts, are common in many places, butldo not know of their use in connection with handles, especially coftin-handles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The handle-fastening, consisting of the handle A and brackets B, in combination with slotted pins C, cast in one with the brackets, and the wedging-keys E, all as set forth, and forming a new article ot' manufacture.
FRANCIS X. GARTLAND.
