IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 1'27,979, dated May 30, 1876; application filed April 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. JARVIS ADAM of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of pump attachments known as horns, the purpose of which is to afford a support and fulcrum for the lever or pum p-handle and the improvements I have made therein consist in the construction of plates provided with recesses or openings for the reception of the pivot of the pump-handle, and holes t'or screws or other form of fastening to the wood trunk of the pump, and curved at their one extremity, and there fitted with a joint, made permanent by means of a rivet or other device, so that, when ready for use, at all times the recesses or holes for the reception of the pivot may be directly opposite each other, and at right angles with the slot or opening for the reception of the' handle; also, in the construction of a pivot,
fitted at its extremities to the recesses provided in the counterpart plates of the horn, and in that portion occupying the wood of the handle, provided with one or more lateral burs or fins, to the end that when driven into the wood the shrinking ofthe fiber upon it may retain it firmly, and any subsequent shrinkage from it may not interfere with its action with the handle.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of the upper portion of a pump fitted with my improved horn. Fig. 2 is a view of the horn detached from the pump and handle, Fig. 3 is a view the recess shown in section.
of the handle, place.
I construct the two parts 'B B, which may be of cast or stamped metal, and I provide them with the holes Q, for attachment to the showing the pivotor pin in pump stock or trunk by means of screws, and with the recesses A in the flange R, for the opening from the common center 0.
Ordinarily, the hole A is drilled through the plates answering to B and B, and after being put in place the pin D is 'driven through these openings and the handle, which is between them. The shrinking of the wood loosens the pin, which then is in danger of being lost." The plates, too, being put in place independently of each other, are frequentlyout of line, and the result is the binding of the handle in its slot, or undue wear upon one side.
In my horn, when completed, each part is true within itself. The two recesses A coming directly opposite each other, the handle W is placed between them, and the ends of the pin D drop intothe recesses A. The whole is put in place and made fast.
I claim as my invention-- A The herein-described pump attachment, consisting of the two plates B and B, united by the hinge O, and provided with the recesses A, as and for the purposes shown and set forth.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
S. JARVIS ADAMS.
