Description

UNITED STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
EMANUEL WEIBLE, OF TIDIOUTE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF 'HIS RIGHT TO J. A. WEIBLE, OF SAME PLACE.
- IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFT-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,481, dated September 29, 1874; application filed August 22, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL WEIBLE, of Tidioute, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shaft Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a vertical sectional view of my shaft-coup- `ling. Fig. 2 is a front View, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, of the same. y
This invention .has relation to means for coupling sections of shafting for oil-.well boring-tools and other purposes; and it consists in a tapered tenon on one shaft-section fitted into a corresponding socket inathe other section, in combination with tenons and notches and a wedge fastening and key, whereby a very secure coupling is made, as will be fully understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, A A designate shaft-sections, on the ends of which cylindrical enlargements B Bl are formed. O designates a tapered tenon or circular wedge,-Which is Vformed centrally on the end of the enlargement B', and which is surrounded by a concave surface, e. The tenon C is fitted snugly into a recess or mortise of corresponding shape, which is made in .the end of the enlargement B, and the concavity e receives a corresponding convex surface formed on this enlargement, as shown in Fig. 1. D designates a wedge, which is inserted obliquely through the enlargement B and tenon C, and when it is driven in its place it will firmly draw the sections together and make av rigid coupling. E designates a key, which is dovetailed vinto one side of the enlargement B, and constructed with a tooth, a., on one end, which enters a notch in the wedge D, and prevents this wedge from becoming loose. The key E is confined in its place by means of a spring, b,'one end rI he enlargements `B B', fitted together by v means of tapered tenons O c, in combination with the wedge D, the key E, and spring b, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above l have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EMANUEL WEIBLE.
