IMPROVEMENT IN SHAFT-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of' Letters Patent No. l07,978, dated October 4, 1870.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TIMOTHY F. TAFT, of the city and county of Virorcester, and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaft-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view ot' my improved shaft-coupling. Fig. 2 represents acentral longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 represen ts a transverse section.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the saine, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature ot' my invention consists in an improved shaft-coupling, as hereinafter explained. y
In the drawings, the parts marked A and A represent the two lengths ot' shafting to be joined. The ends to be united are in this instance cut oft' so as to form a dovetail lock, as shown at B. A sleeve, C, is arranged to slip over and surround thejoint whereithe ends of the shatting meet. Said sleeve O is made as shown in the dra\\"`ings,"fbeing cored outat one side of the center to receive the clamp-piece D, which piece is made in the form of a half-cylinder of. the same length as the sleeve C, and is in this instance held in place by means of lockingscrews a a, set in the shell of the sleeve t), with their ends pressing against the outside ot' the clamp-piece D, as fully indicated in the drawings. v

So perfect isv the operation ot' my improved coupling that it will securely couple the ends ot' small shatting,r where the ends thereof are simply placed together, without any lock between them.
The sleeve C is formed of cast metal, and can consequently be made very quick and cheaply.
Having described my improved shaft-coupling, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the shafting A A', ot' the sleeve C, cored out on one side and fitting around the shaftingon the other, and the clamppiece D, iitting in the recess formed in the sleeve and held in place upon the shai'tng, substantially in the manner shown and described.
