. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN ABBOTT STEVENS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Tatent No. 357,242, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed November 30, 1886. Serial No. 220,300. (No model.)
To all whom) it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ABBOTT STE- vENs, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Latch, of which the'followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure'l is a front View, Fig. 2 a back view,
. and Fig. 3 a central section, of my improved lugs, B B and O, and an aperture, D. The,
lug G is the pivot-lug, to which the combined latch and handle E is pivoted. The lugs B B form the fastenings of a curvilinear spring-rod, F, provided withcentral stops l G, on opposite sides, and with two coiled springs, H H,
0 one on either side of the stops G. The face of the escutcheon may be ornamented or'plated, or both, in any desirable way.
I form my latch and handle preferably all in one piece or casting, with two lugs or projections, one, I, passing through the aperture D of the escutcheon, and the other, K, passing through the plate and pivot-lug G, and being fastened by means of a screw or by heading force of the remaining spring, as shown at X;
down, or by means of a cap or collar, L, or in any usual manner. The lug Iis provided with two forks, so as to straddle the curved springrod and be adapted to receive the pressure of the springs on both sides, which hold the latch ordinarily 'in the fastening position.
M M indicate rings or collars against which the coiled springs bear; but these are not indispensable.
When desired, I may omit one of the springs and provide a stop for the latch against the 45 but generally it is preferable to employ two springs.
Having described my improved latch, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- 5o 1. The combination of a latch, latch-handle, and lugs I and K,with a plate or escutcheon provided with an aperture, D, and carry ing a spring-rod and one or more springs, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a pivot-latch, substantially as described, a plate or escutcheon provided with the fastening-lugs B B and pivotlug G, and carrying one or more springs and spring-rods, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
BENJAMIN ABBOTT STEVENS.
